I *WANT* an Angry Woman as My President, Actually

I *WANT* an Angry Woman as My President, Actually
So don’t tell me Warren’s “anger” is a problem.
By Liz Plank
Feb 20, 2020

Senator Elizabeth Warren has spent most of her presidential campaign playing nice as everyone’s favorite teacher who has SO. MANY. PLANS. But at last night’s Democratic debate in Nevada, she cracked her knuckles, threw some bows, and basically destroyed every single electability argument the media has tossed her way since she announced her run. Then she ate Michael Bloomberg’s ego for dessert.

snip//

While many pundits celebrated the senator’s feisty performance, others played into the sexist trope of the mean, angry woman. (Original, thanks.) As it’s been argued by authors Brittney Cooper, Rebecca Traister, Soraya Chemaly, and several other feminist thinkers, people are still uncomfortable with female anger, despite it being one of the greatest catalysts for historical and lasting social change.

And even though our culture haaaaates angry women, they love to erase them when they’re not angry enough: After a third place performance in the Iowa Caucus, cable news cut away from Warren’s speech and she was basically left out of the coverage the next day. Despite being one of the clear front-runners in this race, she wasn’t even included in a poll about presidential matchups. How does that make sense?

Even after last night’s explosive performance, one headline from the New York Times appearing to recap the debate made no mention of Warren. It’s a classic double standard that’s almost impossible to escape. We ignore women by nature and then get confused and uncomfortable when they’re forced to elbow their way in.

But here’s the mind-blowing truth: Warren’s anger is a great thing. She’s not using it to fight for herself. She’s fighting for the less privileged, a trait I actually really, really want in a leader. For instance, during the debate, she was furious as she stood up for the thousands of men of color who have been stopped and frisked, the millions of black and brown families who were preyed upon with redlining, and children with disabilities who faced budget cuts while billionaires got a tax break this year.

...in his essay on Dickens. It is a very good, positive thing, and we've badly been in need of it for many years in American life. SPW has it, in spades...

We need to revolt against the status quo--the cheating, the money in politics, the greed, AND the income inequality. Who has had her entire adult life devoted to fighting all that?

Senator Warren.

13. If I saw a man act this way, I'd call it appropriate, assertive and strong. But not angry. Certainly

Last edited Thu Feb 20, 2020, 10:34 PM - Edit history (2)

not held up as a great thing, certainly articles wouldn't get written about them, because men are the standard for "normal." Watch a woman behave the same way and everyone needs to minister to her, as if she's abnormal.

No one gives female leaders the objective, trusting respect of normality that they give men. Even men on the street. They've always got to smile. Explain and justify their negative feelings.

Sure, anger is occasional. But it's silly for people to use it as the go-to label for every negative look or statement that we don't understand, like or can't even read.

Has she been ASKED what she feels? Interpreting women's feelings is usually the first unfair and disrespectful practice that audiences and media unnecessarily impose on women leaders.

I saw Warren as calculated and indignant, laying out facts that raise issues about her cohorts' electability. But first, IF she SAYS she was angry, THEN we can ask why, and then write articles from that.

18. I am truly undecided

In fact I donate to both Senator Sanders and Senator Warren.

They are both worthy candidates, with very progressive Democratic values.

I think in either administration, working people, minorities, disabled, poor people will be well represented by both candidates.

But I do think as the leader of our nation, Senator Warren would be a face the world would respect and unlike dotard, our adversaries

would learn to take her at her word.

I think she could bring a dignity to the office of President that would reassure the world we are back on track to the nation we claim

to be.

We have so much damage to repair from the three short years dotard has been in office. It will take decades to repair, if ever.

But of all the candidates I think Senator Warren and Senator Sanders would make those repairs their top priorities.

Warren is a warrior who recognizes that we are in a cold war for our democracy and the other guys aren’t our opponents, they’re the enemy.

Any candidate who talks of working across the aisle and/or moving forward without looking back does not have my support. If one of those candidates gets the nod, he or she will get my vote, but it won’t be an enthusiastic vote and I will hold my nose.

have been holding on to it wanting to make a thoughtful decision as this maybe the most important election in my lifetime (and I'm 63). After last night my selection of Elizabeth Warren is marked and I can't wait to get it turned in next week when my polling drop off site opens.

I've just admired this woman so much through the years (a big thank you to President Obama for bringing her to national attention) and I really trust that she will do the right thing for America.

I’m also a longtime supporter of Senator Warren. I’ve supported her candidacy for the presidency since she announced her candidacy for the Senate! She’s been my choice since Day 1 and I’ve never waivered. I have no second choice. Liz is the one. Our best candidate for president since Walter Mondale. That’s a 36-year wait for me to enthusiastically support a candidate for president.

We need Liz!
