What is Bloomberg really trying to buy?

There have been numerous posts about Bloomberg trying to buy the Presidency, or at least the Dem nomination, and of course that's a completely sinister and unhelpful thing. But if you look at what he's doing, I don't think he's really trying to do either.

What he says he's doing, and watching his actions I'm starting to believe him, is to buy a boot on Trump's ass to kick him out of the White House.

Now there are lots of reasons not to like Bloomberg, and even more than that if you're a Democrat, but if you look at what he's actually been doing with his money he has been taking out brilliant ads attacking Trump. He hasn't been attacking the other Dem candidates. OK he's a little testy about Bernie and Liz, but he hasn't really even gone after them the way he's gone after Trump. And I am starting to think it's honestly what it looks like; Bloomberg fucking hates Trump and is willing to spend a few billion dollars to bury him. Unlike Trump, who is probably in hock to so many entities that his net worth is probably negative to the extent he wants us to think it's positive, Bloomberg is an old guy who really does have all that money, isn't going to live long enough to spend it on anything meaningful, EXCEPT maybe a fuck Trump project.

Why declare as a Dem? It gives him cover to run all those ads as a natural campaign thing rather than as "external interference." He hasn't gone to a lot of trouble to get on the ballot in early states, and he's not campaigning hard against the other Dems. I don't think he really wants the nomination, although I think he will do a mini-Trump and take it if it falls into his lap. But just as Trump was really looking to pad his brand and not win, I think Bloomberg is really looking to fuck Trump and not win.

I might be wrong, and if so we'll find out soon if he starts campaigning harder against the other Dems as the primaries escalate. But what I've seen so far is that he cares a lot more about Trump than he does about the Dem nomination. He cares a little about Liz and Bernie but he's said that he'd prefer even them to Trump, and I believe that if one of them is the nominee he'll continue to pour money into defeating Trump.

Nobody should be considering voting for Bloomberg in the primary. He's not a Democrat and he knows it. But we should be considering that he is in the primary so that he can easily pour his unlimited Citizens United approved money into his cause, which isn't so much getting himself elected as fucking Trump over.

And if that's his goal I heartily approve. And if he pulls Trump and ends up the Dem nominee, I'll still vote for him, because frankly at this point I'd vote for a Hannibal Lecter / Dexter Morgan ticket over Trump, if only because they only kill people one at a time and Dexter would probably go after the members of the previous administration.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Pete Buttigieg

1. Until I see him doing an advertising blitz against other Democratic candidates,

I will assume he's trying to knock Orange Pantload off the top of the plutocratic dungheap and out of the club, entirely.

2. I'm on the fence about what Bloomie really wants, beyond fucking Trump over.

Some argue that he definitely does want the power of the Presidency, and I'm not certain they're wrong.

On the other hand, I think he would consider his money well spent if he "only" fucks over Trump but doesn't get the big prize.

And maybe he really doesn't want to be bothered with the actual job of being President.

Who knows. I just know that in the real world that we live in, it's not bad to have his money on our side, at least up to the fucking over Trump part.

7. Unfortunately, after the Citizens United ruling

This is the world we live in. Big money will rule until we can get a constitutional ammendment to overturn it. Until then if we want to win we need to play with the big money.

9. Yes, I agree wholeheartedly on that point.

It sucks but we are quite far down a road that started many years ago. It will take power to change the rules and to get that power we have to work within those rules.

3. I think what he's trying to "buy" is pretty clear.

He spent $80 million on Democratic candidates and causes in 2018, helping flip the House and starting the gun control conversation in VA and elsewhere, putting him on the NRA's shit list, probably at the very top.

His primary goal for 2020 quite obviously is to get rid of Trump. He has said that he will do everything he can toward that goal, regardless of whether or not he's the nominee.

I think 2018 probably gives that assertion some legitimacy, though many disagree. I also think he's likely to help Democratic candidates and causes in a similar manner to 2020, perhaps on a larger scale.

He's not on my favorites list for the nomination, but I can't really argue with his contributions in 2018 and his goal of dumping Trump in 2020.

11. He doesn't need or want a tax break. Why would he?

He's already donated $6.5 billion to charity and has committed to donating the majority of the rest through the group started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett.

If all he was worried about was money, those actions don't make a lot of sense.

16. Normally I wouldn't either, but

he’s pressuring his big business contacts not to donate to other candidates:

Mike's wealth even affects his rivals’ fundraising. Using his relationships with other rich donors, he’s personally asking them to sit the election out, so his rivals can't raise cash.

12. It's sad

to see you giving up on Pete Buttigieg so early. Pete's finished in the top two in the Iowa and New Hampshire races, and can still string together some victories.

Bloomie is not about "fucking Trump over" as much as he is about boosting himself up, just to win a pissing match with Trump.

I fully expect Bloomie to be putting money into ads that help put Pete into the White House and give us our first First Man, or whatever they'll call Chasten.

I don't see anything positive about Pete Buttigieg, its all about how great Bloomie is.

And you're naive if you think that Bloomie is going to do anything beside boost himself.

Finally, Chasten would be called the "First Gentleman" in all likelihood.

21. Well the post didn't mention Pete because it wasn't about Pete

I don't want Bloomberg either as our nominee or as our President. But I think we should be giving him a little space at the moment to do what he's doing , which is using his money discus throw to whack Trump over and over. If he starts going after any of the Dem candidates -- which he hasn't done so far -- in any meaningful way, then I'd say OK, I misjudged, done with him. But he could be useful if he's doing what I think he's doing and we let him do it.

20. "He's not a Democrat and he knows it."

No, he is a Democrat and people just don't want to accept it.

Party identification is self-defined. If he says he's a Democrat and registers as one, he's a Democrat.

He was a lifelong Democrat until he ran for major. He switched to Republican solely for tactical purposes (the Dem field was loaded). He refused to meet with Republican leaders and met instead with Democratic ones like Al Sharpton.

Spent about 10 years as an Independent, then re-registered as a Democrat. He spent $80 million on Democratic candidates and causes in 2018. He helped flip the House and started the conversation on gun control in VA.

Sounds like a Democrat to me, certainly at present.

The money spent on Dem candidates is a very good sign. But he's got to clear other skeletons from his closet too, some of which are going to be hard. A lot of people aren't going to forget "stop and frisk."

27. I suspect he's working on his legacy.

Life has been good to him. He wants to be remembered fondly (by some people, at least), and he's trying to do something good with his money for the country that made him rich before he dies.

That, I think, is the most likely scenario.
