Then I look at the actual trends, and actual proof, and I think to myself a lot of people on DU are going to get a rude awaking when a real progressive candidate wins the nomination. Like Sanders, Warren, or Yang.

I think the major focus of the next administration is going to have to be focusing on combating climate change, and I don't think a right wing/centrist democrat will make serious effort.

DU is so not monolithic. My issue with Bernie is that he will get us crushed in general if he slips and slides into the nomination. We will get killed in the House and Senate races as well. I actually like his policies, but he is not running where I live atm, ie. Sweden. He is running in reactionary, gerrymandered, hate-radio-filled, violent, white-nationalist reinvigorated, hyper-capitalistic, low info voterland, ie. the US, where you have tens of millions of delusional proles who think they are just one break away from being multi-millionaires, so thus vote to keep a millionaire-friendly system in place as they are sure they too will soon be enjoying its fruits. You also have a shit tonne of 'I got mine, so fuck you!' types and those fuckers vote in droves. Bernie cannot win, as he will have a billion or 2 USD of COMMMMMMMMIE!!!!!!!! red-baiting adverts rain down on his and ALL our Congressional candidates' heads from every conceivable angle and level. Plus the MSM will join in the blood-letting. Hard pass on the Bern, as the nation cannot take 4 more years of Trump with the added hell bonus of Rethug full control of Congress again.

I'm not sure what kind of "straw man" type post you are supposedly rebutting here, but I'll repeat what I wrote again.

In the post you responded to I made conscious use of the word "And". As in: some people "left of their own volition" AND "Many people on both sides here were purged."

I have seen both Clinton and Sanders supporters complain about "good DU members" having been "alerted on" repeatedly during the primary wars until they lost their posting privileges here.

… and just how many tried to pair up Trump's non-interventionist policies with Bernie's as a means of saying he'd be better than Hillary, something that Sarandon herself said, just in case someone tries to argue that they're all Russian bots. Then again, it wouldn't shock me if some Berners were to argue that Sarandon herself is a Russian bot if it means denying just how divisive Bernie's post-Primary schtick was.

I will never forget what I saw on that site and, while I won't stay home if Bernie's the nom, it won't be because of that site and it will take every fiber of my being to drag my ass out of the house to vote for him, especially since I know that the same won't be true of so many of his supporters should he not get the nomination, despite how that will continue to effect so many marginalized people. Yeah, he's even got some marginalized folks thinking that ending class disparity will fix racism, homophobia and other ills. Clearly they never saw that story about the Swiss retail store trying to deny Oprah a handbag. Her wealth didn't change the perception of her skin color and the Bern isn't going to end racism with a free lunch.

29. Things change. I supported Sanders in 2016
Sun Feb 2, 2020, 06:17 PM
Feb 2020

and now I regret it. I was excited by his ideas and didn't see that he's a rigid ideologue who cultivates a my-way-or-the-highway approach to campaigning that verges on demagoguery. It was the 2016 convention that first turned me off - the refusal of his supporters to accept the results of the convention suggested the beginnings of what I'm seeing now: a personality cult. Sanders employs and endorses divisive people who spend more time trashing Democrats than working against Trump, and that's a recipe for disaster. All I can say in his favor is that he'd be better than Trump, which is a pretty low bar. If he's nominated we will lose; if he's not nominated his more fanatical followers will do what they did in 2016: vote for some Green Party nutbag or stay home. If by some fluke of fate he does become president he won't have the support of the Democrats in Congress whom he's been kicking in the nuts for the last four years and he won't get a damn thing done. If he does get the nomination I'll vote for him, but not happily.

I supported him in the 2016 primaries, partly because I felt Sec. Clinton's negatives were too high, and she would lose. But when she won the nomination, I supported her. Unfortunately it turns out my earlier predictions were correct. However I still believe that Bernie would have beaten Trump in that election.

This time I have not committed to Bernie, there being so many other possible choices, and I think his moment has passed. However, having been lurking here quite a bit recently, I am getting tired of all the Bernie-bashing going on here. It's as if I'm being pushed back in his corner which is not really where I want to be this time.

We want Bernie supporters to support the eventual nominee, and all this vicious piling onto Bernie is counter-productive to having a united party in the general election.

nominee representing their section of the party, as candidates drop out of the race. And the media emphasized Bloomberg's financial advantage, and he's climbing in the polls, and being considered more seriously by DUers.

So I wanted to see what the response would be if these were the only choices.

I thought there was a chance Bloomberg would come out ahead, but wasn't sure he would, and didn't expect it to be by this margin.

FWIW, I'd rather see the primary race come down to Biden vs Warren.

I've seen some professional polling done already of that match-up, and Biden wins.

You'd see a different response here on DU, since Warren is leading here.

As for Amy Klobuchar...I really like her, think she has a great future, but don't think this is her year, her race to win.

59. IMO the enthusiasm of the people who do support Sanders makes them underestimate the skepticism
Sun Feb 2, 2020, 08:11 PM
Feb 2020

of the people who DON'T support him. People who might be fine with him in the Senate (as I am) but DON'T want him to be our nominee, because they think he'll lose. And in some cases they don't want him to be our president, even if somehow he wins, because they don't think he can govern successfully.

That skepticism exists. And he isn't likely to convert those people, even if they're willing to vote for him if they have no choice, if he becomes the nominee.

They don't believe Sanders can deliver on his promises. They don't even agree with all his promises.

It's possible to be progressive, to move the country forward, without being as far left as Bernie Sanders.

Polling has shown that most Dems prefer a candidate who can beat Trump to one who agrees with them on the issues.

A lot of polling shows they'd prefer incremental change that's achievable to trying for huge changes that probably aren't achievable.

Sanders has admitted at times that what he wants can't be done without a real revolution.

His die-hard supporters believe that revolution is possible.

Other Dems don't.

Yes, we're all in this together.

And I hope you'll keep that in mind, because the approach you want, that Sanders wants, is NO MORE VALID than the approach other Democrats want.

Sun Feb 2, 2020, 08:29 PM
Feb 2020

There will be endless ads about his time in the Socialist Workers Party of America, a Communist organization. And by Communist, I mean literally Communist. He supported a Communist who backed Iran during the Iran Hostage Crisis and backed the Soviet Union throughout the Cold War.

That will destroy any campaign by Sanders in a general election.

If I were to vote in a presidential

...who our nominee may be, trump and his pukes will be running horrible ads, real or imagined, against any of them...

...the trick is not to be behind the curve endlessly responding, but to slap pukes with our own strong horrible narratives...

...and there's no better candidate out there to create those puke-slapping narratives than Bernie...

...the American people will listen to Bernie because Bernie's honest, tells the truth and offers the American people a reality they want...they know Bernie's one of us and that we're all in this together...

...I truly believe Bernie can handle whatever the pukes throw at him and hit back twice as hard...

...Bernie can do it...

But I'm pretty sure a lot of us will experience this shortly.

Watched the superbowl at a friend's house. He invited a lot of people and quite a few I had never met showed up.

When the trump ad came on the consensus of this room with around 15 was they loved it. The topic quickly turned into communism, socialism. Trust me, that would be a HUGE attack angle on Sanders. HUGE.
If you thought Hillary Clinton hatred from the right was a giant motivator for republican nuts to vote (which they love to do), the communism/socialism angle will be even stronger than the hate they had for Hillary Clinton. Orders of magnitude stronger. Because it wouldn't just be Sanders, but OAC, and the other members of the so called gang.

Bernie can't win purple states. it would be a landslide win for Dump.

He's so stubborn and ideologically rigid that he hasn't been able to get even the most liberal Democrats to back him up because he insists on telling them how corrupt and "corporate" they are. If he keeps kicking real Democrats in the nuts he won't be able to get anything done as president - because not even the Democrats will have his back (and we know the GOP will be out to destroy him). If he's been "working for us" all these years, why hasn't he accomplished anything?

It's just that what Bernie said/wrote years ago leaves him more vulnerable than Bloomberg who has at least the financial resources to hit back.

In fact, the projection we soon will see is aimed to deflect criticism by striking first, and then make it appear that both candidates have the same flaws when we then respond by pointing out that the different ways he is evil. So:

Because Trump lies, he will call the Democratic nominee a liar as soon as possible
because Trump harassed girls/women, he will go after Biden's inappropriate touching
because Trump is so corrupt, he will have attack ads saying our nominee is corrupt

etc., etc.

and he will try to do these things BEFORE the Democrats come out with ads criticizing him for the very conduct he will accuse our nominee of doing.

And right now, I'm very upset with some of the shit coming out of Sander's campaign. I also don't think he would be a good leader because he has a history of not getting along with others all too well. He is stubborn.

But Bloomberg is way less "one of us" than Bernie is. I don't trust him. I'd vote for him over Trump of course. Hell, I'd voted for a literal "5 year old taking a shit on the salad bar at Ruby Tuesday's" over Trump (credit to John Oliver for that analogy). But he is too "law and order", he wants to micromanage people's lives and he comes off cold as ice. Bernie genuinely gives a damn about the average person.

Its a real mixed bag and as much as Bernie Sanders has annoyed me lately, I'd go with him simply because I get the impression that he is a better person.

This is the MSNBC style pandering to the wall street class. I'm sorry kiddo the more I see here the more worried I get that many have bought into this Repulican lite shit. Lesson that many haven't learned *IF WE DONT EXPAND OUR BASE TO THE WORKING CLASS WE LOSE* bringing in a New York millionaire will not do it. Don't be dimm Trump will lose if we have a message that the poor and working class identify with. Hillary lost because Trump was able to frame her as out of touch and elite. In states like Michigan where she lost by 2000 some odd votes how many voters just didn't vote for her because she didn't see a need to visit in that final run up or as a have long suspected it was a f*ck you for the flint water crisis BUT my point being this narrative that people want safe moderates aren't played out in polls or policy.
