Sanders and Warren Supporters Are Fighting Over a Story That He Told Her Women Can't Win

(snip)

CNN reported on a 2018 meeting between the two presidential hopefuls at Warren's Washington D.C. apartment, where the candidates reportedly discussed something of a progressive alliance and their respective prospects for winning the presidency. CNN cited four anonymous Warren campaign staffers, two of whom spoke to Warren about the meeting, with another other two "familiar with the meeting," who said that Sanders reportedly told Warren that he didn't think a woman could win the election and beat president Donald Trump.

The story had a bombshell effect, exposing simmering tensions between Sanders's and Warren's supporters. Some of his have challenged the story's veracity and timing, accusing Warren's camp of playing dirty politics as Sanders has risen in the polls. Others pointed to a 1988 video of Sanders professing support for a female president,, and another of him in 1987 telling third graders that women should run for office.

Sanders, for his part, called the story "ludicrous," basically denouncing it as a gross mischaracterization of the meeting. He questioned the veracity of the report's sourcing and denied many aspects of the report:

Many Sanders's supporters have noted that the candidate might not have been saying, explicitly, that a woman is incapable of running a winning presidential campaign, but merely commenting on what he sees as a culture of sexism that still prevails in U.S. politics. Others noted that the CNN story might have been a ploy to gin up anticipation and drama ahead of a pivotal Democratic debate.

1. What he said 30 years ago is irrelevant to today.

Telling a bunch of third graders that women should run for office 30+ years ago doesn't preclude the possibility that he did indeed tell Warren a woman wouldn't beat Trump in 2020 (or whatever is being alleged).

The situations aren't even remotely alike. One is a generic comment about women running for office. The other is a comment about a specific situation in which the woman in question is his competitor in a primary.

2. "merely commenting on what he sees as a culture of sexism that still prevails in U.S. politics."

gee, I wonder if he felt in 2008 that a culture of racism that still prevails in US politics would have prevented a black person from becoming President?

This sort of statement by Bernie supporters is not the best defense. It is, in fact, promoting the culture of sexism.

5. It's so damning because it fits the narrative of Sanders.

Just look at his 2016 campaign. Would you like an example even more recent or further back? Yes, it's a life-long trend for Sanders.

8. The fight is not false.

Even if the situation itself isn't exactly one way or another. It feeds off of the true and known historical trend of Sanders own life. That makes it damning regardless of the specific words used in the conversation in question. This would be nothing if it weren't for Sanders historical trend.

I'm not playing into this false fight, I'm fostering it. Big difference. I think it's a righteous battle.

14. Peeps think bashing Bernie over false stories, like with his taxes, is the only way to stop him.

It won't work... indeed, it can only backfire, in ways that will either help Bernie or hurt those pushing this false narrative. This decisiveness, that only serves to split the party, needs to stop!!

But I get it... the story is bad news for sacred cows, so it must be labeled as false at all costs.

13. Fight fight fight! call the wallflowers

This story is being discussed on progressive media, but only so far as it relates to how shitty msm has become. It's only divisive crap that is being blown right out of proportion, and, well, we all know about blowback!
So AFAIC this is just an opportunity - you know - there's no such thing as bad publicity! LOL Androgynous popsicles are a good stock tip! haha
