Misogyny anyone?

2 highly qualified women of great distinction are somewhat languishing in the polls while an old white guy on the fringes and unacceptable to most swing voters (Sanders) seems to be marching toward the nomination. Many of Hillary's supporters in 2008 pointed this out to me here on DU. I disregarded them at the time but I see it now.

Sanders is Jeremy Corbyn on steroids and would lead to the biggest Democratic WH loss ever most likely, just like Johnson pummelled Corbyn into the ground. I hope that the rumors are true that President Obama is planning to speak up if Bernie really does start to march toward the nomination.

I won't deny there are a little bit of sour grapes here but it is also undoubtedly true that with their skill set, both Kloubachar and Warren would probably be higher in the polls if they weren't women. Same goes for Kamala Harris too, whom I initially didn't like.

It's always "I'd vote for a woman just not THAT woman". Without fail. Every single damn time.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Pete Buttigieg

1. re:"It's always 'I'd vote for a woman just not THAT woman'. Without fail. Every single damn time."

though that's what I said four years ago, and here I am with Warren as my first choice!

Though yeah, unfortunately, if I happened to prefer a male candidate this time around (which might well have happened if some different male candidates had run), to many here, I'd likely be pegged with that misogyny label for not supporting a female candidate either time. But sometimes it really is the person and not the gender.

It's not an insult, especially for a POTUS candidate... If you think it is, perhaps you should re-examine your choice of candidate.

Having lived through other Presidencies where a VP takes over, I'd rather have a President who is young and healthy enough that that's a very unlikely possibility.

I've also lived through a Presidency of a figurehead who had Alzheimers, but was propped up in the office by his handlers. No, thanks.

120. My point was that illness and sadly an assasination in the Kennedy situation and he was the

youngest president to run could happen...yeah, more likely that it won't with a young person...as for Bernie's heart attack...they can do much now...but it does give me pause that he won't release his records. I fear he may nominate Stein or Turner as his VP and I despise them both.

As for preferring young and healthy, I hear you but I don't see any such candidate who can win a general. And I am not comfortable with this in some ways ...smacks of ageism. On my Dad's side Gran lived to be well over 90 and worked until the end. Warren is above 70 and I thought you supported her?

We need to take MI, PA and WI And Biden can do this I like Biden and think he may serve an eight year term and I know he will pick a great VP...his is a long lived family...but as I stated before , there are no guarantees for anyone at any age.

79. Sorry but yes he's definitely too old to be president and so is Biden

Even if it's mental faculty is 100% at this time, his age presents a statistical risk far greater than others of not being able to complete his term. And yeah I know he's got a vice-president but that's besides the point. We need stable leadership in this country and no one votes for a vice president. The last four years have been a disaster and we need long-term leadership to crawl back from the brink.

I don't care how much anyone likes biting or Sanders, they are simply too old the handle the job realistically and quite frankly they are way too much of a risk. I don't care if anyone doesn't like this but it's the reality.

Accept it
Move on.

Repugs will paint Sanders (same with Warren) 24/7 as a socialist. And there are videos all over youtube of Sanders himself saying, "I am a socialist." He's been saying it for decades.

We Dems have to come to grips with political reality. America is not going to elect a socialist. Sanders is unelectable because of that.

If he gets the nod our republic is over and an unleashed trump who ignores Congress will be our first dictator.

111. WIth EC, VOTERS don't decide; Dem primary is not the General Election

Some blatant things wrong with your statement:

* The 2016 election went to Trump - did that represent what was "best for the country"?

* he was validly elected by the electoral college with the rules of our system. Those rules aren't fair but they are the rules. (And I am including the failure to investigate, let alone prosecute, election tampering, as part of the "rules"

But the main thing, DEM PRIMARY voters are NOT the voters who will be deciding for the country, which of the candidates is best.

As a side note, of the primary candidates, if no one gets a majority of delegates by the convention, it will be a brokered convention. I highly doubt Sanders has any chance of winning a brokered convention. He has "berned" too many bridges and too many people see him as too extreme.

(FWIW I supported him initially in 2016 because I think he is right, mostly, about where we need to get to. But I've come to realize that he has no fucking clue how to get us there in the real world.)

Socialism is still a bogeyman to way more voters than it isn't-even among Democrats as Biden has maintained his lead nationally since he announced.

And if you think Sander's narrow lead in 95% white Iowa reflects the will of overall Democratic constituency...well, you need to do some serious re-thinking—same for NH.

The real reflection of what the party looks like starts in NV and SC.

29. He is not a socialist and please explain what you understand what socialism is.

Bernie's big mistake was to answer the way he did when asked about free healthcare and free education about it being socialist and instead of explaining that:
1. He is not a socialist, he is a capitalist the same way as any other USA citizen.
2. Free healthcare and education are not socialist benefits, Scandinavian countries and many South American countries that are not and those that were not communists also provide both free benefits to its citizens.

Anyway, when asked he said "If you think healthcare and free education is socialism? then sure, call me a socialist!" and that was his mistake, he should have never said that because now, even people at DU, are calling him a socialist.

The only reason we don't have free healthcare and education is because our politicians are corrupt, these industries give money to their campaigns and that is all they care for, most the republican politicians. And on education, republicans have realized that there is a lot of money to be made in education, and thus the "Charter Schools".

There are no "Socialist" countries in the World, there are "Communist" countries which is another name for "Dictatorship", the ideology of "Socialism" is used as rhetoric to bring the masses together and to promise stuff they don't intend to provide, nothing else, and when the masses buy the "Socialism" crap, they suddenly find themselves being victims of a brutal communism.

Bernie Sanders is not a "Socialist", he has money, not as much as the other candidates, but he likes his capitalism the same as the rest of us, the difference is that he understands that our capitalist system has gone past the point where it is not healthy anymore, there is too much corruption, greed, and inequality and he wants to fix that, so please stop labeling Sanders as a socialist, there is no such thing anywhere.

49. There is a big difference about "Socialism" and "Communism" and there is another difference

between the kind of "Socialism" that Bernie wants, which is a "Social-Democratic" government where capitalism is the business model but it is regulated to allow for the social services that a government is supposed to provide to its people, to disallow greed and corruption, it is not for free, these come out of taxes that people pay from working at capitalist businesses/industries, but taxes are regulated to allow those who make more to pay more and those who make less to pay less, which is the way it should be.

I believe he fails in explaining exactly what he is for, he has tried but doesn't seem to do it in a way that would shut people up about him being a "socialist". There is not "socialism" in the World, socialist rhetoric is used by communists who are nothing but dictators to attact the people, once they vote for them the country ends up like Venezuela, Bolivia, etc.

Yes, he has called himself a socialist, and last time he did that he did it out of anger because of the question regarding healthcare and free education, to believe that he is a socialist is to not understand what socialism is really about.

I also have a lot of friends, relatives and acquaintances in my same age group who are strongly pro-Bernie. We are all sick and tired of the over played fear mongering around the "S" word. That meme played out a decade ago. That's what happens when the opposition calls everyone a socialist. Anyone hanging on to it needs to evaluate their ability to progress with the times. Talk to the youth occasionally and get a feel for how "not scary" that word is any longer.

Older voters are going to vote for whoever has the D behind their name. However, the younger voters, and I talk to a lot of them, don't plan to even bother to vote if it's not Bernie. He is the one most likely to bring out the youth vote. He may be old, but millennials love him. They understand his values and the fact that he is fighting for them. We old folks are going to be gone soon, so it is their world at stake and we should listen to them.

Don't kid yourself. The best way to get Trump again is to run a Centrist. The best way to beat Trump is to run the old curmudgeon socialist.

82. That is where you are wrong...a letter next to your name means you are an independent or a Democrat.

You choose the letter. Now Sanders caucuses with us and shares some values...I don't know that he shares all of them...or that he doesn't...no idea. However, being a member of a party is a big deal and when Sanders doesn't join our party, I find it a repudiation of our party and not a good example as we try to recruit folks into our party...Being an independent sends the message that our party is not good enough for him. So those who admire him perhaps won't become Democrats and that is a shame.

We need to attract voters. Sanders also put Stein voters into his campaign...no Democrat would have done this...third party voters that cost us the 16 election in MI,WI and PA. This sends a message that hey voting Green is OK AND IT IS NOT OK. I believe that there are more folks that agree with us than don't and unless folks become Democrats, work their asses off in every election-not just presidential elections and have the discipline to vote Democratic in every election- no matter what, the GOP will continue to kick our asses and win elections they should not. So you see I honestly think Sanders being an independent hurts that effort. And he could be a Democrat if he chose but does not choose to do so.

31. Warren should be top tier. She has a progressive platform and actually has a plan.

Bernie? Not so much. Lots of rhetoric though. Also not a dem. And what do we expect his administration to look like given the people who are in his campaign? Scary. Why does he have these people in his campaign??? And I am afraid of the hostage posturing that may take place if he does not get the nomination.

83. I would like some facts and figures to go with all the pipe dreaming.

This (below), is from his website-no figures, nothing specific, just sweeping promises. I think the goals are commendable, but tell me how it is going to be accomplished. He has always been vague on the details. It is much easier to promise and harder to deliver. He does not want to take the heat or the scrutiny for committing himself to the details. What has he accomplished as a senator?

"Details
In the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, everyone who can work in America should have the right to a decent-paying job. We can and should have a full-employment economy. In 1944, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt talked about the right of every American to have a job. That was true then. It is true today. A job guarantee will lower the crime rate, improve mental health, and create a stronger sense of community. It will create a much healthier and happier America. A full-employment economy is not a radical idea. That means:

As part of the Green New Deal, we need millions of workers to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure—roads, bridges, drinking water systems, waste-water plants, rail, schools, affordable housing—and build our 100% sustainable energy system. This infrastructure is critical to a thriving, green economy.
At a time when our early childhood education system is totally inadequate, we need hundreds of thousands of workers to provide quality care to the young children of our country.
As the nation ages, we will need many more workers to provide supportive services for seniors to help them age in their homes and communities, which is where they want to be."

Legislation as a senator-

Two post offices, bicentennial day for Vermont, one bill includes women as vets, a protection act for a mountainous area, and an interstate water usage bill. Nothing since 2013-14. Not exactly a heavy hitter.

I like Ike (Eisenhower) The buck stops here (Truman). A chicken in every pot...all catchy easy to remember campaign statements.

that is how they get you. By attacking the specifics...I have no doubt that sexism plays a role...we live in a sexist country. So a successful candidate is going to have to overcome this and convince enough people that she can win...as Obama did fighting to win in a racist society...If this was not such a desperate election with a loss giving Trump four more years, I think more people would give women candidates more of a chance. But if we lose the consequences are so dire that people don't want to risk it.

I support Biden because I always liked him, he has experience and he can win the states we need. I like Amy too..and think she would make a kick ass VP. And in four or eight years she could win the presidency...honestly I don't think Warren would. We win elections in the center.

It is frustrating that BS seems to get a pass on his toxic proxies and lack of actual plans. I think Biden needs to align himself with the studies/facts on the benefits of medical marijuana especially since the opioid crisis has taken so many and restricted access for people to get needed pain relief. I really don't understand why it can not be a defining issue for Dems. Senior citizens would benefit. It will be interesting to see who Biden picks for VP.

64. A record 17 times voted Most Admired Woman too.

By November 2016 she was an evil terminally ill crook plotting WWIII.

From Steve Almond's "Bad Stories, What the Hell Just Happened to Our Country":

"Misinformation becomes mainstreamed, consumed not by thousands but millions. The pursuit of knowledge becomes a process of self-indoctrination, one abetted by those profit-seeking algorithms. I saw this process play out firsthand with a young friend of mine named Jon. ... Here was a shy guy in his early twenties who spoke thoughtfully about economic injustice. In the months after Clinton formally accepted the nomination, the nature of Jon's rhetoric changed.

"The Russians made a calculated bet that a guy like Jon, if sufficiently goaded, would shift from an agenda driven by progressive goals to one driven by animus toward Clinton. Jon professed disgust for Trump. But his Facebook page was filled with links to articles vilifying Clinton. ... 'This country can't survive another Clinton presidency,' he wrote to his chat group, who all just happened to be female Clinton supporters. 'Clinton will lead us into war. She'll create a corporatist controlled police state.' When another member of his chat group asked about the dangers of electing Trump, he replied, 'Why are you stuck on fear mongering?'

"But his logic was that of a fatalist: the system was broken beyond repair, policies were empty promises to a wage slave like him. The conservative movement fosters this false equivalence, which breeds apathy and depresses turnout. 'A vote for hillary is a vote for trump,' Jon wrote a few weeks before the election, which is how you know he isn't a person of color, or a Muslim or an immigrant. ... Over the course of a single campaign, his immersion in internet culture had transformed him from an American idealist into a Russian bot."
