My lifelong Republcan mother just called
She is 70. A lifelong Republican. Never voted for a Democrat. She's white, has a Master's in Nursing and an amazing grandmother to my 18 yo HS senior. She said she is so alarmed by this Iran conflict and her grandsons future that she is going to vote for Joe Biden. She said she couldn't support "any of the the rest of them because they are too far left". Now...she knows I supported Bernie in 2016 and I'm a pretty liberal guy but I told her that's ok, I understand and Joe will be alright.

I have a cousin who's a nurse (only she's more like 52, not 70) and she has just posted something on FB that reads like unqualified support for the possible coming war.
BTW, I'm 71 myself. But a nurse Republican? Does she enthusiastically favor the current crappy healthcare system? Is she okay with people going bankrupt over medical bills? ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

is eons better than it used to be before the ACA and millions are alive because of it...Are you OK with people being refused insurance because of pre-existing medical conditions? Do you want to got back pre-ACA...it is the only health care we ever were able to pass and the only one we ever will most likely.

...and end up short than shoot for ACA Plus and end up short. Let's try and be ambitious... Pushing for Medicare for all and ending up with ACA on Steroids might be the end result but we got to at least try.
Is America with "Obamacare" better than pre "Obamacare"? Heck yeah. I don't want to go back there. Thinking that the worst case scenario for my kid's healthcare is a plane ticket to London and to be seen on the UK's National Health Service... it shouldn't have to be that way. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

22. the perfect public option is to allow anyone who wishes to
have Medicare. It should be offered as an option on employer plans and in the ACA marketplaces.
As for M4A, it is not something that can be put into effect overnight. Adding that many people at once would overwhelm the system. Having it available to those who want it is a very good start. I think that once enough people take it on, word will spread ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

No, I do not want to go back to what it used to be. But the ACA is being systematically dismantled. I just did a quick Google check. I'd thought the pre-existing conditions mandate had been cancelled already, and I'm happy to see that I'm wrong.

We need to win..fix the ACA and add a public option...and can I say I am disappointed in Warren and Sanders for going for M4A when we are in a court battle to save the ACA...it gives right wing SCOTUS a out to destroy our only health care...both lack sound judgement in this matter IMHO.

29. Completely agree ...
When Democrats ran Congress for 50 years (1930 - 1980) we built the strongest Middle Class humanity had ever seen.
Everything that FDR implemented would now be considered too far left and everyone would be calling it socialism. Now that (R)'s have run Congress for pretty much 40 years (1980 - 2020), they've decimated the middle class in the US, while China now has a middle class that is larger than the US population. We have 350 million people living in the US, and China has a middle class with more than 350 Million, imagine that. You wonder why international corporations are turning their attention to China, India, and soon Africa. The (R)'s want to get rid of public everything. Everyone calls that privatization, but I call it what it really is "profitization", someone has to make money on anything that is currently public. Under the (R)'s any department with and alphabet soup designation should be profitized. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

45. America has become deeply stupid and free from historical perspective.
It's one of the most infuriating things about living here. I'm so inclined to move out of here. I see the same lack of awareness among many highly opinionated folks in this forum. We once had a grand New Deal. For decades the middle class began to prosper, although more so among the white community which often shut African Americans out of the prosperity. Now we see lip service to the plight of Blacks, to their abuse by cops, but somehow mentioning economic inequality and overhauling healthcare is considered "extreme." That's total rubbish. Total rhetoric inserted even in this very forum to benefit the establishment and the rich.
Wake the f'k up America and read a history book. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Undecided |

here in California. But if they are wealthy, their money and taxes over rule everything else in the voting booth. Trump could be chopping the heads off live babies on TV and they would say "but my 401K is doing great!"
I hate to say it, but it may turn out that the only thing that might save this country is a major economic crash. Of course, downturns in the economy are inevitable, and statistically overdue right now. I don't want to see all the bad things that happen to many people when the economy crashes, but if it's going to happen, I rather see it now than after a Democrat is back in the White House. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

I'm so happy to hear whenever one GOP voter changes his/her mind, I figure at least 10 more are thinking about it. We Democrats/liberals need to talk with conservatives every day and get them to question the motives and values of the Chump-Republican Party.
Maybe they'll never flip and vote Dem like your mom plans to, but at least they might see the light about their own Party. Maybe some of them will refuse to vote for Chump next time, and I call that a win of sorts. I'm in Pennsylvania and I do believe Joe Biden can win here. There are enough moderates here that will pull the lever for Biden when the chips are down, even though they couldn't do it for Hillary in 2016. (But that's another story.) Bernie has his good points however I don't believe he'd ever win in PA. I'll vote for whichever candidate wins the Democratic nomination - whomever it may be. 40. You win elections by expanding the electorate, not shrinking it.
Link to tweet Former Republican U.S. Sen. Gordon Humphrey and former New Hampshire First Lady Dorothy Peterson are among 100 independent Granite State voters announcing their support for former Vice President Joe Biden on Monday.
The Biden campaign said 93 of the 100 “New Hampshire Independents for Biden” are making their support for the former vice president known for the first time. The other seven have been previously announced and are reaffirming their support as members of the grassroots coalition. The campaign said it intends to make a broad, concerted effort to speak to independent voters over the next six weeks leading to the first-in-the-nation primary on Feb. 11. Independents, formally known as undeclared voters, make up the largest voting bloc in the state. As of Oct. 30, they comprised 42 percent of the registered voters in the state, while Republicans were 29.5 percent and Democrats were 28 percent of New Hampshire voters. Independents can take either a Democratic or a Republican ballot in primary elections and then are able to return to undeclared status if they wish. The Biden campaign said the independent voters on its supporters’ list “believe Joe Biden is the best candidate to defeat President Trump and restore the soul of our nation.” ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

Don't get me wrong.. I'm glad your mother woke up a bit, but it's sad it has to hit home before people wake up. ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |

56. A touching story...and kudos to your mother! You must have been apoplectic!
My mother, also a lifelong Republican, also voted for Hillary after a similar "Ah-ha!" moment. She's 80.
I bet our mothers would be friends if they met! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for sharing your Mother/Son story. It touched me. I'm my mom's only boy and she survived my coming out experience! ![]() Afterthought: My mother spent her second career in education. She was a Principal. She had a Masters in Educational Administration Longerwordicantremember...or something. She's a tough cookie! ...and a role model for me! You go, Moms! ![]() primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden |
