So because a reporter f***ed up very badly, people are "done" with Buttigieg?

People need to check themselves.

This was literally the definition of "fake news".

I heard the recording. There's no way anyone could hear anything but the word "normal" there.... doesn't even come close to sounding like "Obama".

Which means, the reporter had a preconceived notion and "heard" what he wanted to hear.

And this is major malpractice, and should be a fireable offense.... or at least take this reporter off the trail.

And any of you who came down on Buttigieg for a quote that HE DID NOT MAKE ..... need to apologize.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Amy Klobuchar

1. It's insane isn't it?

It just shows that politics isn't always about the truth. Sometimes it's just about tearing another candidate down.

I don't think this will significantly damage Mayor Pete. And anyone who says they are done with him as a result probably wasn't with him in the first place.

I did something I normally try not to do and reacted before all the facts were in. My bad. I'm now glad I stepped back and slept on it before going any further with it. I was pretty pissed off and would've said some things I would've wound up regretting. I also went back and amended my post. It didn't feel right leaving up the original one once I found out the truth. I can't guarantee I won't make the same mistake again but I will try very hard not to.

60. So he says there's no going back to Obama or Clinton, the American political world since he was born

has been blown up by its own failures which culminated in Trump. If the old ways worked, Trump would never have been possible. Neither infinite political warfare or going back to normal is possible, there must be a new normal.

He does not give details. The reason things blew up: conservative voters don't really want Republican policies and aren't ideologues (they like social safety nets, clean air and water, good schools, health care, the wealthy to be taxed more, etc.) so fear mongering and racism and wedge issues are used to win votes. The goal of the movement conservatives who fund right-wing think tanks and the Republican Party is for America to become a banana republic. If only voters realized this!

They politicized evangelicals, created a media bubble of 24/7 hate and fear. Politics as war, no compromise/bipartisanship during the 90s wasn't normal. Everybody knows with Obama it was total obstruction, not normal. Each decade it became more extreme. Now 50 or so years since normal began to be destroyed, the consequences are here, intended or not. It's not even a party anymore, it's a type of organized crime.

Trump is the logical outcome. He dispensed with the dog whistles: how thrilling it must be for those who had been told for decades that foreigners and minorities were taking all the good stuff away from them to hear Trump "tell it like it is." Here was someone who talked about how terrible the country has become because of those people. He said he wouldn't cut SS and Medicare and Medicaid, would give them great health care. Turns out voters don't care about the traditional Republican ideas on free markets and trade. It wasn't that Republican voters had changed, it was that they found someone who was most like them.

46. not that Pete said it, but yes

Beyond that, on the subject of purity, IMHO it has been weaponised to the point that it used to try and ramrod down whatever the particular person negatively claiming it supports. We simply cannot try and 'cleanse' the party at every seat level in terms of the eradication of all non-moderate/centrist voices. I do fully believe that if we go too far left in a nationwide election we will lose, but in safe blue districts we cannot wipe out every single further left voice. I do NOT believe in primarying incumbents in swing/pink/purple/redish seats, but in terms of centre to centre-right DINOs in safe blue seats, then on a case by case basis, I can get on board. There are only 2 atm that I would love to see beaten in primaries (Cuellar and Lipinski) as they are against much of the actual Party platform and in Cuellar's case, actually supported, fundraised, and campaigned for a climate change-denying, racist Republican (John Carter.)

For both there are a lot of other reasons (Cuellar is A rated by the NRA, they are both anti-imigrant, anti-LGBTQ (they both still would vote to take away my marriage if they could), were anti ACA, did not endorce Obama, are pro-lifers, etc. etc.) Lipinski-affiliated people also ran a despicable smear campaign against Marie Newman (she barely lost after Lieberman's RW-backed group No Labels and other RW groups dumped in almost a million dollars at the last minute) where they ludicrously called her a holocaust denier and smeared here as anti-Catholic too. Newman had support across the board from most national Dem groups, in cluding EMILY's List (one of their super rare losses in 2018.) I so hope those two go down. Cuellar's district has never elected a Rethug, and Lipinski's has went Rethug ONCE, for 2 years, since the 1950's (the 1972 Nixon blow-out, and then reverted back in 1974.)

Those 2 are it for me, in terms of primaries I would like to see the incumbent lose.

I also do NOT want to see AOC and others like her go down. Wishing that is what I mean about purity tests going both ways. If we tried to only have a party of Manchin, Sinema, Collin Peterson (he is in a ruby red district so I cut him a LOT of slack) Cuellar (there are so many others too, that make this a more well-rounded typology I am trying to describe) types, we will lose most of the further left voters. At some point, they will walk and probably try to do an actually 3rd party, which would be disastrous, as not only does that aid the Rethugs immediately, but, in order to try and make up the lost votes, the remaining Dems will move even further right, which in turn may eventually cause so many to leave that the new 3rd party turns into a huge disruptive force.

I go into greater detail on all that here

22. For some, it's more than the misquoted Obama comment.

Buttigieg has no national government experience. Acquiring it in the Oval Office is a dealbreaker for many. Perhaps if he had been a governor of a state or mayor of a large city like New York or Chicago, he would be better qualified. As it stands, Pete needs more seasoning than the being mayor of a city of 100,000 to be qualified as president. Especially when it comes to dealing with Republicans. It will take more than a well-crafted and eloquent speech to prevail.

23. Be cautious in everything we read.

I didnít like the attacks on Biden. I thought they were bullshit. But I wonít say one word against the democratic candidates. We need to give them a chance to defend themselves before we believe every word or post we see.

"cancel culture" mentality maybe 2 weeks ago!

Big K&R for this.

26. I personally find hyper-partisan supporters ALL to be distasteful...

I am all for a robust exchange of ideas and debates on WHY a policy or position or plan is a better solution to a problem...but the attacks on other Democratic candidates is so tiresome and petty that it makes me want to vomit half the time.

If candidates slide into constant sniping at each other for temporary gains (only to later see themselves as stars in the GOP attack ads against our eventual nominee) they lose a ton of my respect and desire to support them.

I have said all along that my vote is already cast - I am voting for the party nominee in 2020 and there is NO DOUBT about that. Pete would still be my first choice, but I will vote for Joe, Liz, Bernie or anyone else that might come through the primaries.

36. How about false accusations?

Since he DID NOT say that, then I guess false accusations against a Democratic candidate are ok? Jumping the gun on a story and bashing that candidate are also ok too?

33. I only saw one from the original thread do anything like an apology

Even after the facts came to light some are still posting as if it was all ok. I posted in that thread last night asking people to take a deep breath and that I was going to wait for Pete to expound on it more. After that about 100 more posts came with the "This is disqualifying" and "Done with him" etc. type memes.

So I went back today and asked some to correct the record or apologize because maybe they jumped the gun in their bashing of him. But the ones who usually reply to anything and everything and always have to have the last word are suddenly silent.

54. Omg.. People were reacting to what the reporter quoted..

We had no way of knowing it wasn't true until the reporter confessed.

This isn't on DU.. we were all over it when the OP was UPDATED.

HOW WOULD WE KNOW PB DID NOT MAKE IT UNTIL WE KNEW?

62. After the updated post showing the correction and

subsequent posts throughout those threads pointing out the journalist's correction, some were doubling down, demanding definitions of phrase, and then still pushing the false narrative. Unfortunately, anyone here for a day or so, could probably name the monikers engaging in the pile-on instantly, I know I could. Same shit, new target. Get those same monikers out of Primaries and onto General, their posts are thoughtful, and informative... That's why I don't have any of them on ignore.

People need to stop tearing down and start building up. Way too many posts here allowed as 'vetting', when they're scathing and ripping on OUR party leaders. It's disgusting the way people are quick to jump into every thread to demean, and attack either the candidate or their supporters. It doesn't convince anyone to change preference, it does however, curb enthusiasm.

64. The primary blame belongs to the reporter, no question about it

However maybe it's better not to react so quickly. This isn't a slam on anyone. I don't think that most of the people that reacted to this did so maliciously. I do think the inflammatory headline in the other OP should've been changed.
