LA Times journalist now saying Mayor Pete quote was inaccurate

My story about @PeteButtigieg ends with him referring to the “failures of the Obama era.” That’s an inaccurate quote — the result of transcribing a noisy recording at a loud rally. His exact words were “failures of the old normal”

I deeply regret the mistake When we make errors we own them. This one really hurts because it went viral. Here’s the candidate’s full remark: “I also fundamentally believe that there is no going back. My message is not about going back to where we were.

I think because I come from a part of the country where normal has been a real problem for a very long time, and I think the failures of the old normal help explain how we got to Trump, I am much more interested in building a future that is going to have a lot of differences."

Whoops!

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

1. Unfortunately, most people will not see the apology. Hope Pete can get it out

on all media. Still going to be hard to un-ring the bell. If he gets the nomination, Trump will have a field day with all this.

2. lol

What a sh*tshow. The phrases do not even sound too similar. That said, also shows why candidates' communications directors should perhaps check with the candidate directly before defending/or offering interpretation of quote that is taking heat for being controversial (I've seen a ton of other candidates who were misquoted have their teams do this too, though I will say that it's a very difficult thing to deal with in the era of rapid response).

Bad journalism -- don't know if they'll be able to put the toothpaste back in the tube even with the retraction.

8. I'm grateful for the correction

But it's extremely hard to undo something like this. It's infuriating that this reporter could somehow mangle a quote and misrepresent Mayor Pete's message and throw it out there as red meat for people to pounce on. If anyone has actually listened to Buttigieg's speeches, they would know that he has nothing but praise for Obama and his legacy.

15. That would be unfair to Pete though...I would really like to understand what was meant...the

quote doesn't really make much sense. Why bring up the 'old normal' without defining it?

That would help. I am not supporting him either way in the primary (General yes) but I would like to know because he is talented and I might support him in some other endeavor in the future.
