Bloomberg to pass on Iowa, NH, focus on Super Tuesday states

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michael Bloomberg plans to skip early voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire if he launches a presidential bid and instead focus his efforts on the crush of states that vote on Super Tuesday and beyond. It’s a strategy that acknowledges the limitations of his likely entry into the race at this late stage and the opportunities afforded by the billionaire’s vast personal wealth.

Bloomberg adviser Howard Wolfson says other candidates already have a big head start in the first four states to vote — Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina — and Bloomberg needs to be realistic about where he can make up ground.

“If we run, we are confident we can win in states voting on Super Tuesday and beyond, where we will start on an even footing.”

Bloomberg’s team has moved swiftly to carve out space for the former New York City mayor. Bloomberg himself has called prominent Democrats to alert them to his likely run, and his staff is scrambling to meet fast-approaching primary filing deadlines.

5. Did you see this Bloomberg article? 'Joe Biden in Danger of Humiliating Loss in Iowa'

(Bloomberg) -- Joe Biden risks a humiliating third- or fourth-place finish in Iowa early next year, according to nearly a dozen senior Democrats in the state who attribute the prospect to what they see as a poorly organized operation that has failed to engage with voters and party leaders.

With fewer than 100 days until the Feb. 3 caucuses, Biden is failing to spend the time with small groups of voters and party officials that Iowans expect and his campaign’s outreach has been largely ineffective, according to 11 senior Democrats in the state. That could send Biden to a crippling loss behind Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg, who have highly organized campaigns in Iowa, said the Democrats, most of whom requested anonymity to speak candidly about the campaign.

11. Iowa first, 'Biden may have the most to lose from Bloomberg presidential bid'

Michael Bloomberg’s move to enter the Democratic presidential race could hurt the prospects of Joe Biden, as the former vice-president and early frontrunner struggles in the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

Biden has seen his support slip, particularly in Iowa and New Hampshire, where Elizabeth Warren, a senator from Massachusetts, has eked out a consistent lead. He has also fallen in the fundraising, after raking in $9m less last quarter than Ms Warren.

“Bloomberg damages Biden the most because it is just another articulation of just how badly Biden is doing that he is even contemplating getting into the race,” said Patti Solis Doyle, a former top aide to Hillary Clinton and Mr Biden

15. trash

That is pure supposition in the article. Bloomberg doesn't have support among Bidens demographic base. Bidens support is made up of mostly minorities and non college educated whites. Bloombergs previous support has been among people with a college degree. He's more likely to draw from Warrens base if he draws any at all.

This all goes back to the idea that voters are aligning with candidates based on ideology when that isn't the most predictive element.

10. Well, Biden does much better in states more representative of the Democratic electorate than Iowa.

I'm not worried about how he'll do.

I expect him to win Iowa as well, even though it isn't representative of the party.

6. I think that is exactly right

Bloomberg did the math once, it really hasn't changed that much.

I think this is actually more a reaction to Mayor Pete. I think he would have sat out if Klobuchar or Booker had emerged as the Biden alternative by this time.

Amy Klobuchar

12. I just don't understand this Bloomberg move.

Is this a real fun for the Presidency? Hard to believe.

Is he delusional about him being a positive influence on the party and our eventual candidate? Hard to believe.

Is this Jedi-knight level ratfucking?
