(31,261 posts)He comes from a well known political family, is active military or a Vet, is a sitting State Senator. His family has as much if not more prominence in that state than Tulsi's have. If she does not debate him, she falls behind. He is not like her other two opponents, relative unknown that she could isolate and ignore.

http://files.hawaii.gov/elections/files/results/2016/primary/histatewide.pdf
then the general election results, where she outperformed Clinton by 20 points

2018 also did not end well for Gabbard's next Democratic challenger, Sherry Alu Campagna

(49,472 posts)had the same people predicting the same doom for Gabbard in the last 2 primaries. I like my chances of being correct... a lot.
No skin off my nose if she loses, I just do not have any great feelings either way, unlike some here do. They are both Democrats running so it is a no-lose situ, the Rethug will have zero chance. Best of luck to the both of them running.

Her House primary is one that I likely get involved in through donations to her primary opponent, the only other two democrats that I am going against like that in primaries are Lipinski and Cuellar.

(58,785 posts)We probably don't know all the reasons Gabbard may have developed more national support than some very fine and impressive candidates. But at least initially it was largely arising from Sanders encouraging his supporters to see the DNC as their biggest enemy, instead of the Republicans, and Gabbard attacking the DNC on national TV, etcetera, both messages strongly augmented by Russia's cyber warfare.
In any case, even though Sanders distanced from her after she noisily endorsed him, in 2020 Gabbard will bring a bunch of outsider money to her Hawaiian district race. This interference, much of it resulting from unfortunate delusions that have nothing to do with this district's interests, may possibly overwhelm constituents trying to pick their representative. That's how McConnell keeps getting reelected in spite of always betraying his constituency -- flood the races with money.
As for Cha's OP, that's my best guess for why Gabbard ran as a Democrat in the first place. And best of luck to him.

Kai is very popular here on the Big Island. Not sure about Maui or Kauai, but if he can raise his profile statewide, he is a solid challenger. Ive been to a few town hall meetings with Tulsi, she talks like a politician, very guarded. We will see.

Yes, he needs to go all over the Islands and speak truth to power.. he definitely is distinguishing himself from Gabbard by his strong statement for Impeaching trump.
I have had no respect for Gabbard since she went on fox "news" all the time.. and dissed President Obama.

(289 posts)She is able to win because she spends a lot of money on name recognition, signs all over the place. Her opponents have been outspent and not well known. She lacks substance, and the crowds at her gatherings dont seem inspired or excited. Now that she is on the national stage, more people will see her, but that may work against her here at home. We will see.

(289 posts)Where she is following her fathers footsteps, every position a political calculation. Who knows where she really stands on anything? Better off without her. She must know she will never be president, and a failure to get re-elected to Congress would be a huge setback. Wonder where she gets her money?

(12,578 posts)It doesn't change the fact that Gabbard voted against Trump's position more often. My point being that, if the idea behind the OP is that her constituents will vote her out because they are more anti-Trump than she is, she's actually very anti-Trump even when compared to many other Dems like Beto... but yes, EXCEPT for her stand on impeachment. Whether nothing else matters, I don't know. It's also possible that her own position on that will shift as more comes out. As of now, she is one of 16 Dem house members who have not yet crossed that line.
