Warren Goes After Trump's Sister in Anti-Corruption Push

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is adding some new proposals to her anti-corruption plan, this time with one particularly provocative target: President Trump’s sister.

In a Medium post published Monday, the Massachusetts Democrat proposes closing the loophole that “allows federal judges to escape investigations for misconduct by stepping down from their post.”

In outlining the idea, Warren specifically references a case involving Trump’s sister Maryanne Trump-Barry, whose retirement brought an abrupt end to an investigation into her role in various tax schemes of the family and potential fraud therein.

“Under my plan, investigations will remain open until their findings are made public and any penalties for misconduct are issued,” Warren writes in the post.

1. This I like very much

She was part of a $550 million tax evasion scheme after all.

I'm not surprised that it seems to be the case.

21. Drumpf family values: they ALL got rich off the various grifts. Only the one brother...

...missed out, as he somehow failed the family expectations and died, and his family was tossed aside to fend for themselves with a sick kid.

But oh yes indeed, the judge was not exempt from raking in the family's ill-gotten gains, and she knew where it came from.

6. I like it. But I worry the name-check

Will have a negative impact on her. Folks perceive family as off-limits to an extent. We just haven’t acclimated to having a family of criminals and grifters in the White House.

9. There's no statute of limitations on judicial ethics investigations

but retired judges aren’t subjected to conduct rules which is why she quit. It’s a bogus loophole and closing it is easily defended. While she was sitting in judgment of other people she was helping her father rip off the government and thousands of tenants whose rents were increased based on the inflated costs of building improvements that were funneled to her shell company.

14. Yes she was helping her father with rulings

... in which she and her siblings also directly benefited. I don't see how she should be shielded from that behavior. After all she was on the judicial bench for over 20 years, I believe.

Too many Republicans have dodged Congressional ethics inquiries by stepping down.

8. Not a great idea

If she committed criminal acts, she would still be investigated. If she stepped down, there's no reason to investigate for the reason of firing her. The relatives do their own thing. I wouldn't doubt she's as deplorable as most Trumps are, but that type of thing can easily be done to us too.

24. tax evasion and fraud are criminal acts

The judge may have committed criminal acts, but apparently she will NOT still be investigated. She avoided it by stepping down.

so - your assumptions may be wrong, and Warren is proposing to change things so that they are what you would expect.

30. I doubt the authorities would blatantly

ignore criminal conduct just because she stepped down. Maybe if it were some sort of plea deal, but who could she turn on? OTOH, they are Trumps, and the authorities under her Dotardess' brother, so it is not impossible.

11. Yes, please, and make it retroactive

There is no logic in that loophole, needs to go away, and if investigations from the past where judges took advantage of it can be re-opened, the better.

She'd be wasted as a VP, in my opinion. She'd have a stronger voice and more impact staying in the senate at that point.

29. Biden gave up his Senate seat to be VP. Was that wasted?

Our top candidates are current senators except for Biden. And all from blue states where Dems could win the special election to replace them.

There are reasons why I would prefer a legislator to be VP and a governor or someone with executive experience to be president, but we don't have that so I'm supporting Warren for president because I like her plans and policies.

16. Of course she had to recuse herself from cases involving her crooked brother

who just coincidentally is closely associated with a lot of criminals.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryanne_Trump_Barry

In 1985, she recused herself in a drug-trafficking case due to her brother Donald's relationship with the alleged trafficker.

Anyone named Trump would be involved in tax evasion and other crimes. They're one very shady family.

18. Trump & Co. Have Shown Us How Many Loopholes Need Closing

We are experiencing unprecedented corruption and it will require Dems in the White House and in the majority both houses of Congress before this travesty can be adequately addressed. Kudos to Warren for calling out the rapacious Trump crime family and having an actual plan to address it. They have been receiving a pass on their many crimes for far too long.
