Trump Aides Are Desperately Betting on the Left to Cancel Biden

"Going into 2020, Republicans appear to have coalesced around a strategy to keep Donald Trump in office: bait Democrats into nominating a far-left progressive, and thereby drive centrists back, screaming, into Trump’s open arms. The two biggest threats to this plan, G.O.P. insiders suggest, are Beto O’Rourke and Joe Biden, whom they see as more palatable in a general election than a socialist like Bernie Sanders.

There is already something of a plan in place to tank Beto, even if it’s not fully baked. Republicans figure they can play up suspicions on the left that O’Rourke, who previously drew donations from the pro-Republican business establishment, is a phony progressive who doesn’t really believe in anything besides his own celebrity. (The Club for Growth is already out with an ad decrying O’Rourke’s “white male privilege.”)

Biden, however, is another matter. Although he has yet to declare his candidacy, the former vice president consistently holds the lead in Democratic primary polling, and has the highest net favorability rating of any potential candidate in the mix. Trump, according to Politico, is rightly concerned. Behind closed doors, he reportedly fixates on how he would perform in a head-to-head matchup against Biden, and has recently “peppered” aides with questions about Biden’s polling and what it would mean for a general election."

29. Oh yuck. That would totally sap my enthusiasm.

And I think it would be incredibly tone deaf. I will vote dem no matter who is on the ballot, but a double white man ticket would get zero money & zero volunteer time from me. Also I think it sends a message that the dems have capitulated to the right wing myth that only white men can beat Trump. I think the dems could lose if they put two white men on the ticket. I think Biden's smart enough not to do that.

4. I suspect that the only sort of far-leftist that would make Democrats vote for Thimp

would be hard-core Marxist-Leninist Of The sort that have been taking double-plus Rip-van-Winkle length naps since 1970–and at the risk of disappointing card-carrying members of Club Pachyderm, there are even fewer of those on the ground in Team Donkey than there are members of the Ripon Society in the Republican Party.

...with the "centrist" label.

Just a guess, though. The Trump camp should realize that most Dems aren't going to cross over in 2020.

7. Of course you wonder what those are...

Reagan-lite?

I’m the sort of Democrat abhored by many on this board—someone who concurred with many 1970’s type moderate Republican, realized that the hard right had taken over Club Pachyderm by 1990, then became a Democrat. The political spectrum has shifted far to the right, with most of the tractive effort supplied by the hard right. At the risk of being obnoxious, anyone to the right of me is some sort of conservative—they aren’t moderates at all.

8. The politically disinterested, maybe.

There are a lot more of them than many people realize and a lot of them identify as "moderate" or "centrist" because it's kind of a default, not because it's really representative of anything.

I think that bloc was important for Trump in 2016 and could be again. We often wonder how anyone who is paying attention could vote for Trump. The "paying attention" part is sometimes the key.

12. Those politically disinterested swing independents will decide the election

They favored Trump in 2016 then immediately shifted away early in 2017.

Your term politically disinterested is perfect, based on my experience hosting debate watching parties. There is no long term logical focus or priorities. They are easily triggered by one or two comments or concerns. It is improper to believe they are aware of some major variable because they won't be. They will know the gossipy or quirky stuff.

IMO, at some point we need Trump to say or do something particularly outrageous, even by his standards. Something that drives his 538 approval back into the 39 range. If nothing like that shows up the approval rating will likely drift upward into danger territory.

If I were to vote in a presidential

14. Very interesting points you are all making

I have been trying to understand the people I live among now in central TX and politically disinterested fits perfectly. In groups, even around election time, the subject of politics is not argued or debated, it literally never even comes up. I watched Beto rising here until a couple simple repuke smear ads got on Facebook and passed around like wild fire. Then he plateaued.

I watch Gallup tracking of trump approval that was daily, then weekly, now monthly. I tried to match events to seriously downward trends, but not much stuck out.

I think someone like DNC? should pay a pollster to take a serious look at the biggest reasons for disapproval so all Dems could focus in on them all the time.

For instance, remember how he used to brag about how HE knew how to create the best healthcare plan? Where's that? How he would make it (on day one) where you could walk through any gang and crime-ridden neighborhood and be 100% safe?

the Orange Motormouth is the fact that he (Trump) has absolutely NO sense of humor. Biden will openly laugh at him, something that Trump is defenseless against. Talker. With Palin, think he didn't want to look like he was bullying her. It would be hard to not feel infinitely superior to trump, eh. Just hope he gets a think tank working on how to deal with him. Especially when he brags about cutting regs. You know there's probably a gold mine in there. Like, " oh , yeah, you eliminated the reg for dumping chemicals in Lake Superior, I wonder how parents feel knowing their kids swim there! ". Made up...but there might be something similar out there.

13. At least right now,

Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders would both be excellent candidates against Trump, and could beat him. A Centrist Democrat can win. And, a Social Democrat, even if misguidedly calling himself “Democratic Socialist,” can win. I think appealing to Working Class voters in the Midwest will be a helpful strategy.

Trump won most of the Big 10 area, because he campaigned as a fiscal moderate. But, now that he is clearly to the right of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, he will probably lose Working Class voters in states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

If Trump were smart, he would actually be a fiscal moderate again, and triangulating to the Left, instead of worrying about whom his next opponent will be. But, now he is breaking a campaign promise, proposing cuts to Medicare and Social Security!

on me that it would be easy to get Beto on the record because he is so open and doesn't obfuscate like most politicians. At his Iowan question and answer session it did cross my mind that the question about the Green Deal could have been a plant.

It was interesting to hear the guys on Austin radio...the two somewhat liberal ones, talk about Beto in Iowa. They were pissed at him. They said for a Dem to win Texas all they had to do was not be trump. Just be a nice friendly family guy. And that Beto will scare people away with liberal policy proposals.
