Did you know Sanders helped Jesse Jackson win the Vermont Caucus in 1988?

You'll find this interesting if for no other reason than the pictures!

19. Indeed, Tanker Dukakis couldn't beat Bush Sr.

To me that shows the importance of making sure our candidate has robust support that will engage those who think there is no difference between the parties. I want to see tens of thousands showing up for our Democratic candidate at rallies all across the country. No more simply accepting the best of two undesirables.

24. And you think Jackson would have done better in 1988?

Instead of 1988 it would have looked like the 1984 results. Dukakis was a decent candidate but the tank commercial really hurt him. Not saying he would have won without it, but he was 17 points ahead in Summer 1988.

25. Not sure. Something didn't work for Dukakis and maybe Jackson wouldn't have faltered.

Hind site is 20/20 but it won't show what didn't happen, only what did. Dukakis got in the Tank, wore the oversized helmet and lost the election. Jackson never ran in the General as a Democrat. That's all we know.

33. I like rallies but rallies as we saw in 16 don't always votes.

As for Dukakis, I have a different way of looking at this...all Democrats need to vote for the Democratic nominee in every election. If this had happened we would not be looking at Roe being repealed and right wing judges set to destroy progressive policy. Dukakis was beat up by everyone...and in the end who lost? Democrats lost including those who weren't inspired by Dukakis...I vote for the Democrat always in every election.

20. Indeed, but acording to the linked article, the primary on Mar. 1st was

for the democrats a straw poll with the caucus a month and half later.

"Jackson, a month and a half after he lost to Dukakis in the nonbinding primary by 31 points, won the Vermont caucuses—edging Dukakis 46 to 45 percent. The outsider had bested the party establishment guy, and in his backyard no less. It presaged, in some ways, Sanders’ own upsets against Clinton in 2016 when he trounced her in New Hampshire on the way to winning 23 primaries, stretching the contest into late spring.

It’s impossible to quantify the precise effect Sanders’ support might have had. Jackson campaign staffers say their furious organizing efforts closed the gap. But after that? “I think Bernie might’ve made the difference between winning and losing,” Steve Cobble, the campaign’s national delegate coordinator, told me. “He was, without question, the leader of progressives in Vermont,” Glitman said. “If Bernie had not really convinced a bunch of us to go to the Democratic caucus to support Jackson, I don’t think Jackson would have won the Burlington caucus—there were a lot of progressives there,” Bouricius added. “It was,” Jackson told me, “very valuable.”

16. Pretty hard considering that they conduct a Primary! There is an unofficial, non-binding "caucus"...

...that not all candidates participate in, but it's basically what they call a "beauty contest". No delegates are elected.

In 1988 Michael Dukakis won the actual primary with 56% of the vote. Jackson got 25%.

22. The primary was the Non-binding affair, the caucus picked the delegates.

At least that is the opinion of the linked article:

"Jackson, a month and a half after he lost to Dukakis in the nonbinding primary by 31 points, won the Vermont caucuses—edging Dukakis 46 to 45 percent. The outsider had bested the party establishment guy, and in his backyard no less. Either way, Sanders endorsing Jackson seems to have had some effect on his progressive followers and on Jackson's campaign.

Until Sanders releases his tax returns and his campaign turns to mush I'm supporting him, the Grump who isn't really a Democrat and has no support from the African-American community.
