I'm a little scared & thinking about switching my support to Biden

First off. I do like Biden. I always have. But I like several candidates more because they are more "progressive".

If I could wave a magic wand I would easily pick Warren to be the President. I think she would bring the biggest change in the direction I believe in. She would go after the banks, wall street, corp. American more than any other candidate (besides maybe Bernie).

But I am also worried that she could lose to Trump. I'm so scared of him being reelected. I do think Biden would beat Trump & actually beat him pretty easy.

My first thought was that since Trump's approval is so low, this would be the best time to elect a real, left leaning progressive candidate. This might be our shot. But now that Trumps poll numbers went up some and all his hate speech. I'm really worried of another 4 years of this man.

Its not like I would be unhappy with Biden. He is a good man. He would definitely get our moral compass back. He just does not excite me as much as some of the others. But he does seem like the safe pick.

My question for the DU is - Do I vote with my heart or with my head?

I don't get to vote for a long time being in PA but I have given money to Warren's & Harris campaign. Just wondering if I should just give my support to Biden.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Pete Buttigieg

4. I think all of us know how Warren and Sanders will be vilified in the ads.

It will be bad for everyone, but those two candidates ( Warren is one of my favorites BTW), will be ax murdered in ads run by super pacs paid for by various organizations including financial institutions. They will scream Socialist as loud and long as they can. Since the majority of Americans choose their elected officials like they buy cereal, those ads matter, truth be damned.

In a perfect world I would vote for Warren in a heartbeat, but when it comes to winning the White House and restoring order I have decided to stay with Biden.

It still comes down to getting out the vote, which I will do my part to make happen.

86. "Exceptional"? Joe Biden?

I could think of a lot of adjectives to describe Joe Biden, but "exceptional" would not be one of them.

"Safe" is probably the most suitable. And there's nothing wrong with safe. I will vote for Warren in my primary. But if my fellow Democrats decide that they'd rather go "safe", I'd be disappointed but wouldn't have any real problem with that. I'd vote Biden without reservation because our number one overriding priority must be the removal of Trump SFB from office.

6. when one is afraid, one should examine the rational and logical bases for that fear

if it's logical and rational to be afraid, then be afraid. If it isn't, then don't.

I see ZERO evidence that any of our top four candidates CAN'T beat Trump.

Now, I have some concerns about Sanders, but the data thus far says nothing but that he CAN beat Trump, as can Biden, Warren, and Harris.

So until we see more relevant data closer in time to the start of the primaries that suggests otherwise, I say vote for the best candidate. If the data changes, then you can reassess.

So, if you like Warren, support Warren. IF the data shows that "only Biden can win" sometime in the future, feel free to change.

27. I don't view it as optimism

I also think each of the top four CAN lose to him.

There's no guarantee. There's no Obama of 08 or Clinton of 92 out there right now that is just destined to be President.

But I just look at the available evidence, and the available evidence right now says any of them CAN win, none of them CAN'T win, and thus we are all free to vote our conscience.

I have some concerns about Sanders, but right now, since I don't have data to turn those concerns into fears yet, that's all they are right now.

I, too, do not think she can beat Trump. We need a candidate who will not just beat

Not as left as some of the others, not to the right of the rest.

Let's not forget that she's a PROVEN fighter, for all Americans.

He's fourth on my list after the two highly qualified women, and then probably Booker, but it's just as silly to say he can't win, as those folks who proclaim only he can win.

58. I like her. But she has tied herself not only to MFA but to billion, even trillion dollars

investment in canceling 95% student debt, free college, 50 billion to Black colleges, 200 billion to
opioid epidemic, universal childcare, affordable housing, healthcare for all undocumented people,
military housing...

It is not a question merely of whether or not these programs should have priority over investment
in existing ones or how much money to spend, but that the impression non-progressives will form is that Warren is a tax and spend candidate.

I wish she would moderate her positions. We can go a long way to lightening the student debt
burden without total amnesty. Meanwhile, foreclosures across the nation show evidence that families, and seniors too, are plowed under in mortgage and property tax debt.

Opioid addiction treatment is covered under both Medicaid and Medicare. So expand on that, but
200 billion?

Honestly, every candidate will have some uphill slog over a vote, a bad story, being too old or too young, but Warren ‘s will be this—promising a policy in every pot and managing to convince
Americans that these policies should have priority, that these are the only way to go, that all this
would not raise taxes substantially.

I can only tell you where I'm coming from--straight from the head with the lead question: who can beat the daylights out of Donald Trump and clearly repudiate Trumpism. At the moment, my heads answers: Joe Biden.

I, too, like Elizabeth Warren. Always have but I'm simply not convinced she could beat Trump. And that's the main mission. Because anything less than a clear, undisputed win (as in blowout) means ruin. For everyone and for the future.

I believe Joe Biden can take it to Trump, right the Ship of State and repair the damage this crew has exacted.

For me, the head rules though my heart tells me Biden is a good, decent man with scads of experience and knowledge to do what needs to be done. He can put us back on track so we can go forward rather than spill over the cliff.

At this point RIGHT NOW, Biden is the more likely winner in an election that doesn't look nearly as easy as 2008 did.

In 2007 - 2008, Clinton, Obama, and Edwards were leading - often by significant amounts - in hypothetical match ups with leading Republicans while Bush's numbers were in the low to mid 30s. Fact.

Trump's numbers are in the mid to high 40s now and only Biden consistently polls outside the margin of era in hypothetical match-ups with Trump.

43. we aren't in late 2007

we are in the middle of the equivalent, first of all.

Second, no, they weren't:

The first time either Clinton or Obama had more than a five percentage point lead on McCain wasn't until this poll:

Associated Press/Ipsos February 22–24, 2008 Hillary Clinton 48% John McCain 43%
Barack Obama 51% John McCain 41%

Even that was a bit of an outlier because the next few polls had both of them within the margin of error.
In fact, Reuters/Zogby had it dead even between McCain and Obama and McCain leading Clinton by one in their April 10-12 08 polling.

Even after Obama won the nomination, as late as the first two weeks of September, McCain was leading in at least half the polling done, and more or less tied in the other half. (This was the Palin bounce soon to be followed by the Palin crash and the financial collapse).

There was no certainty until the end of September after the financial collapse where Obama significantly led by "substantial numbers."

At this point in 2007, the folks being polled on the R side against Obama and Clinton were folks like Guiliani, Fred Thompson, and Mitt Romney. McCain wasn't even being polled against those two that often. One October 07 poll had Obama and Guiliani tied.

So, your revisionist history is revisionist...and your argument isn't based on actual facts or evidence.

62. I lied, one more comment

OMG...did you just link to a Guiliani-Edwards poll from Jan 08?? LMAO The THIRD place candidate against a guy who by Jan 08 was not remotely the front-runner anymore? I don't think I've seen someone try something so self-evidently just plain wrong to make a point in my life.

And from your second link:

"On the Democratic side, the year began and ended with the same front-runner. In contrast, the national ordering of candidate support on the Republican side was significantly different -- and more muddled -- in December than it had been in January."

Spoiler alert, the year ended with the person as front-runner who, how shall I put this...didn't win.

"Obama's ratings have been the most positive of these three Democratic contenders in each national Gallup Poll conducted in 2007. Still, his ratings ended the year slightly more negative than in the early months of the year.

Hillary Clinton's +18 favorable rating had fallen to +3 by the end of the year, having been in net negative territory at several points before that. John Edwards' net favorable rating stayed essentially constant as the year progressed."

Still seeing nothing that says "Dems got this" as you claim. NOTHING in that second article says ANYTHING about running the tables. My God you should maybe just sit the next few plays out.

And some of your concerns might wash out over time. We are at a point of serious uncertainty.

I wouldn't worry about giving Biden money right now. I would keep giving to Warren. See where the chips fall and how things are looking by the time they come around to you. Fact is, it might not look anything like today.

I find myself holding similar thoughts to you. Right now, Warren is getting my money. I have given to other candidates including Biden. But in the near future it will just be Warren. I also support Biden by staying positive about him. It's not hard for me as I really like him.

Just like he tore apart Paul Ryan and Sarah Palin with his smile and "Mularkey" comments, he will do the same to Trump on the debate stage in ways Hillary Clinton was unable to. Joe is the bigger man in ways Trump will never measure up to.

Biden has a plan that could work...consider jobs lost at banks and in the insurance industry should Warren win somehow...we would be tossed out so fast our heads would spin...but in my view she can't win MI, PA and WI...and she could hurt our senate efforts and cause us to lose the house...with the health care issue.

I think he easy wins PA, Mich, Wisc where I think Warren & Harris could struggle in those states. Biden does connect with the white middle-class voter and he also connects well with the Black & Black female vote.

I think Biden is the easiest travel road. Not the road I want. Again, I say that with great admiration for Biden. I do like Biden.

But when I hear Warren speak I completely agree with her and I feel her passion.

I think we have some really good candidates. I really like Harris also & would love to see her on stage debating Trump more than anyone else.

Buttigieg I think is really good also. His calm personality comes across very likable.

71. So you think he connects with the white middle-class voter better than Warren or Harris does.

That seems to be your primary reason. Would that be fair to say? Your secondary reason is that he connects at least as well as Warren and Harris with the black vote, male and female. And those things together is why you think he would easily win PA, MI and WI?

As for the polls—the ones showing how much Biden would beat Trump by—I don't think they have data that separates out how voters in PA, MI and WI responded (do they?) so I'm at a loss to understand what the basis is for people being so certain that Biden would take those states. Even with the polls fluctuating, as polls do, it doesn't seem to shake people's dead certainty. It's repeated so often it's become a mantra.

Anyway. Thanks for your sincere response, and I'm in PA too, so I can commiserate with how our choices are slimmed down by the time our primary rolls around. But there's lots to happen between now and then. A lot can change. I see no reason to feel bound to a candidate at this point.

83. It's just a lot of assumptions about what a narrow slice will or won't vote for

We are basically trying to pick up a net 80,000 votes, or around 1% of the electorate in 3 states. People are claiming to know that the crucial 1% will, for example, vote for an experienced moderate male Pennsylvanian but won't vote for a progressive woman. There is no way any poll could show this because the numbers are so small. But there are polls that show many people believe that other voters will vote this way.

Personally, I ignore the electability nonsense. It is not that I don’t think the issue is important, rather that I have no faith in rapid cycling polls, and certainly no faith in the media that thrives on milking every ounce of angst from them.

I want each candidate to be true to themselves and the voters. Let the chips fall. My preference on DU is clear. Until I vote, I reserve the right to change my mind, and so I will be attentive, but will not obsess over the issue.

People choose a candidate for different reasons. For the primary, vote who you think would best represent you and your interests. This lets the party know the temperature of the electorate and the issues most important in a particular state. This helps the nominee hone their pitch.

If that's Biden? Great. If it's someone else, that's fine, too.

He is the absolutely PERFECT choice for a unity and coalition nominee. Many are not comfortable with the candidates the furthest to the left. Many are not comfortable with Biden. Beto is a essentially a progressive moderate. He has many of the same goals as progressives but he approaches those goals in a moderate way that doesn't scare the living daylights out of people.

I don't see anyone else who can truly bring in millions of new voters and unify the party without simultaneously inspiring new voters on Trump's side to show up and vote for hate.

When I see people excited at the thought of him being forced out of the race I see people hell bent on prying defeat out of the jaws of victory.

69. You started with an emotional question and probably gave an emotional answer.

You started with fear and intuitively jumped to Joe Biden as the "safe" bet. But if you are like most people, your intuitions about safety are more based more in emotion than rational analysis. An experienced moderate geographically desirable white male will always seem like a likely winner because that's our stereotype of a winning candidate. But such people often lose to people with less experience who aren't from swing states aren't the most moderate or aren't white.

Instead of starting with fear, start with your objective - winning. Then look at what factors make a winning candidate and look for historical, psychological or logical factors that support each factor. Once you have a set of reasonable factors, chose the candidate that best matches those factors. For me, at the moment, that adds up to Warren.

Interesting you talk about "magic wands." They actually polled this. First they asked people to pick a candidate preference. People chose Biden. Then they asked who they would pick if they could wave a magic wand and declare a President. People chose Warren. The results show that people are psyching themselves out through "electability." They are guessing (wrongly) that everyone else wants Biden, when in fact, more people want Warren. Warrens biggest problem is that she doesn't "look like" a winner, even if she is one.

I didnt know they did a magic wand poll. Pretty cool.

I did see on one of the latest polls they asked if you cant have your first choice who would you choose and Warren was winning that by a lot. That probably falls a lot into people taking Biden because they feel he has the best chance to win and then go with who they actually want with the 2nd choice.

I try to make the most pragmatic choice.

87. Don't support anyone out of fear. It does not reside in our forebrain.

But our more primitive selves.

Weigh what your reasoning tells you.

But Biden’s last couple of day have made him even more attractive. Good foreign policy speech, excellent healthcare policy and now a plan for rural America.

I hope you come around to Biden. But not through fear.

90. Vote with your head.

But, that doesn't mean you have to change who you're voting for right this moment.

We have a long way to go to until we vote. Warren is a respectable candidate. I do think Joe is more electable (thus my support for him) but Warren isn't someone to laugh at either.

I understand your trepidation. Trust me, I do.

My advice is to take some time, maybe even write up a pro's and con's, reflect on it and then decide when you're ready to decide. If your head says Warren go with Warren. If your head says Biden go with Biden.

Whatever you decide, trust yourself and know you made the best choice to the best of your abilities.

92. I'm going to vote with my head.

If polls show that a very progressive candidate (my preference) would beat Trump in a general election, I'll vote for him/her.

If the only way to victory is a more centrist candidate, that's how I'll vote.

I'm not wasting my time listening to people who offer "explanations" for why some candidates will do better against Trump than others, either. I want to see the polls, from organizations with a decent track record in that regard.
