Howard Dean says Democrats will lose if they have ‘two old white guys’ on 2020 presidential ticket

By Felicia Sonmez June 26 at 11:58 AM

Former Vermont governor Howard Dean said Wednesday that Democrats won’t win the White House if they nominate two older white men to be president and vice president in 2020, echoing calls by other prominent liberals for the party to embrace diversity on its presidential ticket.

Dean, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 2004 and was later Democratic National Committee chairman, made the remarks at a Washington Post Live event.

“If we have two old white guys at the top of this ticket, we will lose,” Dean said.

Donna Brazile, the former interim Democratic National Committee chair who recently became a Fox News Channel contributor, agreed with Dean at the event.

Consider what might be a typical woman swing voter.

She usually votes Republican because her parents were "meat and potatoes" Republicans - but she detests the Orange Oaf.

She's seriously considering voting Democratic this time - and then the Dem. nominee picks a fellow older white male as his running mate.

That could lose us her vote right there.

Now multiply that by 5 or 10 million.

Our party is diverse—women, LGBTQ, AAs, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Latinx, progressive whites—not hard to understand.

Let the ticket reflect that, not just white guys. Got it? Let's make the effort to be inclusive, even though some don't seem to want that.

And btw, neither of those two tickets would excite enough voters to actually win. Biden and Sanders are actually both older than trump. Why would we be foolish enough to give up both a youth advantage and a diversity advantage. Gabbard is a DINO and Williamson is an unknown so that ticket won't fly.

We have several great candidates from which to choose a ticket that has diversity and youth compared to trump.

Our party's demographic is diverse and the ticket should reflect it.

Pair one white guy with a woman/POC then we're getting somewhere. And the white guy doesn't necessarily have to be at the top of the ticket.

I think. Jimmy carter born in 1924 so 52 when elected. That makes Biden, Bernie and warren all old for Democrats. Very interesting. We don’t win with old candidates would be an interesting thing to run on. On the other hand , old rules of thumb could be dead.

I really don’t get the excitement about him. We need young people, minorities, and women to be excited to vote and eager to work for our candidates. Just because he is familiar and seems to be liked by the media doesn’t mean that he will be a strong candidate.

Last time I checked, the period prior to the primaries was a time for Democrats to consider which candidate they favored. Some Democrats (and Independents) are yearning for new ideas, new ways of doing things.

I like Joe Biden, but he’s not my first choice. I want change, a new path, a different road. I don’t care what the polls say. I don’t care what the consultants say. I’m not looking to vote for who I think will work well with Mitch. Politicians like that have blood running out of the stab wounds in their backs before they reach Mitch’s exit.

I admire Elizabeth Warren’s courage and tenacity. I respect Pete Buttigieg’s intelligence and vision. Eric Swallwell is a real gem and Beto is as compassionate a candidate I can remember in 50+ years of voting. Kamala seems tough as nails. I like her.

I’ll ignore any “bashing” or “trashing” chatter. That’s not what I’m doing. Like many others, I’m taking my vote very seriously. I’m simply undecided and carefully considering options. In the end, we’ll come together. For now, some of us are simply in a different place.

While Howard Dean was my pick when he ran and I thought how he was taken out over nothing, I don’t agree with this.
1- if the desire to remove trump does not outweigh the gender, race, or age of our candidate then we deserve to lose the election.
2 - the Democratic nominee of the last 3 presidential elections has been either a person of color or female. I think it might be time that we can work toward removing the gender/race/sexual orientation qualifiers when selecting our next nominee and choose based on policy proposals and platforms.

While there are merits to what Howard said, I think there are 2.5 battles lines that will play out this primary season.
1- the instability and anxiety Trump has caused leaves many yearning for normalcy and calm (Biden fits this bill)
2- the desire for a hard correction welcomes a new, charismatic inspiring candidate such as Warren or Mayor Pete or Bernie
2.5- racial/gender issues disqualify half the candidates and if one of them happens to get the nod, they may be too damaged to win or they may damage the rest of the field trying to stay in the race.

At any rate, I believe using age, race, or gender as a qualifier is just as wrong as using age, race, or gender as a disqualifyer

I do hope that the process and debate remains focused on the issues and more energy is spent by the candidates promoting their positions rather than attempting to exploit weaknesses in opponents in the field that will serve no positive purpose and only lower prospects of victory next fall.
