Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumAndrew Yang is on Chuck Todd's show right now.
First time I've seen him. He seems to have a lot of ideas but not much more charisma than Mike Pence.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(18,837 posts)Basically, the second he heard the idea, he snapped back and ran down the history of proposed VAT / National Sales Tax / etc proposals and how well they were received on the campaign trail.
Todd didn't seem to care for him, grilled him pretty aggressively.

(115,679 posts)Yang didn't do a very good job of defending - he seems to be an idea guy who hasn't figured out how to execute his ideas.

(12,165 posts)Yang's VAT approach is interesting since some of it would be used to fund his $1,000 universal basic income for every American. That would essentially pay for the VAT for people who have low incomes.
He would keep his VAT level somewhat progressive by taxing luxury goods at a higher rate.
It's an interesting idea, but it's hard to craft a brief message for the voters without going into UBI and the ins and outs of that.

(56,582 posts)It's all in what you exempt and don't and how much you rebate it. If you call a $12K annual UBI a "rebate" on the 10% VAT that funds it, it's obviously not regressive (since most people don't spend $120K in a year).
