BREAKING: Buttigieg leaves campaign trail; will skip DNC's LGBTQ gala in NYC

“Mayor Pete Buttigieg has stepped off the presidential campaign trail following a deadly shooting by a police officer in his city and canceled a planned appearance Monday at an LGBTQ gala in New York hosted by the Democratic National Committee,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Buttigieg: “We’ve had prior cases of use-of-force incidents and officer-involved shootings where I hesitated, frankly, to get in front of cameras because we didn’t know very much, and it was out of our hands. What I was told by people in the community is that it is important to open channels of communication to try to be clear on where the city is, even if we don’t find ourselves in a position to be able to say or do much right away.”

The Logan's widow says 'In 30 years of marriage I've never seen him resist an officer'. The police officer says Logan was rifling through a car, then approached him with a knife. The family will be holding a vigil at the site of the shooting.

Not only at the fact that it happened again but also that any woman would describe it that way. She never saw him resist an officer. That means he has been targeted, likely, his whole life and this isn’t an isolated incident. My journalist background tells me to think “allegedly” and that maybe he was a bad guy who lunged with a knife. But history tells me that the “other side” is rarely the case. 🤨

Where are we as a culture that a wife would need to describe her husband that way? And where are we that repeated opportunity to “resist” - implying Times he was held/talked to on baseless allegations is a real thing?

of what is politically correct. His city needs him. They need his empathy and compassion, both of which he has. He will be a great comfort to them. Like Obama, he knows what is needed and does it because it's just who he is.

We're seeing innocent (often unarmed) people either shot or killed (murdered) by cops all too often and, at the same time, dedicated first responders falling like flies all over the country in the normal course of their duties protecting and serving the public.

I appreciate Mayor Pete's efforts here and hope that they lead to an open dialog on both sides of this tragic issue.

The video/ audio from many of these encounters consists of cops threatening deadly force, giving conflicting orders and/or pretending to see a gun.

And when you look at the actions of the Parkland school cop, it's clear that some cops are more concerned about preserving their own lives at the expense of civilians. That's not fair. They signed up for all the risks, we did not.

So whether it's a case of over the top risk aversion or outright sociopathic behavior, something has to be done, finally, to protect innocent civilians. Even when people aren't innocent, they deserve a day in court as opposed to one cop playing judge, jury, and executioner.

I hope Pete gets to the bottom of whatever happened in this latest case, and that he crafts a specific plan for police reform that would be federally enforced.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
