An observation about Beto and the "media darling" syndrome

Beto's Senate run got huge publicity and made him nationally well known propelling his Presidential campaign. Yet since declaring I don't see or hear much about his campaign anymore in the media. At the start pundits were saying he was too full of platitudes, style not substance and that a lot of his appeal was that he was against Ted Cruz...and now that shine has worn off. Standing on tables, waving hands got a lot of laughs.

Well today Beto has published his stance and plan for LGBTQ rights. Following on from his comprehensive climate plan. Following on from his immigration plan and gun control plan. He has a team in place in Iowa to go with his retail politics skill. He has Obama campaign alumni on his campaign.

His Presidential campaign is full of substance. But his polls do not reflect it and that has to be down to the media ignoring him. It's like there is a notion that he had his 15 minutes during the mid-terms so they have to move to the new shiny toy. I don't think that is right and it certainly isn't fair.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

I agree that he has gotten a bad rap. His campaign is very serious and full of substance if you examine it fairly.

2. The national media were punishing him for two things...

First, he put meeting the voters ahead of doing interviews on their shows and second...he criticized Netanyahu for embracing far right bigots in order to hold onto power in Israel. Although Beto supports Israel he said that he thinks leadership on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides right now really aren't good brokers for peace.

He has performed incredibly, his plans are great, his town halls are outstanding...but because the media has been condescending and dismissive the polls reflect that. What is happening on the ground is very different, though. The polls only reflect name recognition and what the media is pushing.

I wish some of them would drop out, so we'd have like 15.

Even if it was Joe Biden, whom I am supporting.

Too many heads talking.

Despite what anyone says, the man has the 'it' factor when he appears at his rallies and social meets. I didn't find the Vanity Fair spread offensive; it anything it was a continuation of the star treatment that frankly O'Rourke had earned in Texas. He's grown as a candidate, adding substance, policy and a more controlled/relaxed manner in his delivery.

That being said, I think there was a concerted effort to diminish O'Rourke by various factions. You add that to the media's inattention and you have a very good candidate lagging in the polls. It's going to difficult for O'Rourke to bring it back; he needs a standout moment in the vein of his NFL statement during the Senate race. But if he's able to grab that lightening in a bottle a second time, there's no question IMHO that he'd be in the top tier.

We shall see.

A demolition derby, actually. In Beto’s case, he had to be kneecapped to make way for the mayor. It was a well-orchestrated media campaign and he was too busy driving around in the boonies to realize its lasting significance (he didn’t have a real campaign staff either).

take on Trump.
His concession speech was not good and he waffled before announcing after the Senate race.
That took some bloom off the rose and allowed several others to enter the race.
I actually think if Beto had announced almost right away after the Senate loss there would be 4-5 less opponents in the race right now
But he let some room show and folks just slid in

He's too low in the polls, I've been told.

He should run for the Senate instead, I've been told.

He's not the smooth-talking mayor of a college town, I've been told.

He's not "seasoned" like a former vice president, I've been told.

He was "born to be president", which was a bad thing, I've been told.

He shouldn't "apologize" so much, I've been told.

He's too "white" and "privileged" to be president, I've been told.

It's frustrating to hear these things, but that's how things go.

Posters on DU get worked up about their candidates, but no one is “supposed” to vote for anyone.

The primary forum is not a good place for thin skins. Don’t take things personally.

12. Well, I could quote some homophobic comments about Buttigieg, which is pretty bad to see here.

The Sanders folks can quote plenty of snark directed toward their candidate (I’m guilty too), and I’ve seen all the women get criticized for pretty much everything; posters even take shots at the poor saps polling down at 1%.

If you’ve been here since 2002, this should come as no surprise to you. And guess what?

It’s going to get a lot worse in here before it gets better. That’s the primaries forum.
