Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhere Joe Biden has the right message?
When he talks about unifying the country.
Most people, Democrats and Republicans, understand that Donald Trump is a divider. That is a negative that he carries. Division with every group or class, depending on which support him and which oppose him. He has managed to divide the nation strongly along Party lines.
In my opinion, Joe Biden is on the right track when talking about uniting America. But, how difficult is it going to be to unite this country?
How different will we be after the next election?
I wonder.

(17,276 posts)and we don't have a blow-hard tweeting night and day stirring up hate, we can begin to heal. Yes there will still be that minority of right wing haters and their media outlets. But at least not in the White House.

(23,932 posts)think Biden is aware of that -- or cares. I also think that electing any Democrat as president will not be a reset button the way Biden sells it.

A return to what passed for sanity is what Biden offers. You know, the deal where most people keep their heads down and their politics to themselves because the top guy is no longer a profoundly deformed hater-in-chief winding up fully 1/3 of the country with his half-baked riffs on victimhood. But the victims, real and imagined, will remain unappeasable, with profit- and power-motivated giant communications platforms stoking and merchandising their inchoate rage. Until Democrats realize the best way forward is to stop avoiding this reality and confront it with a credible policy-grounded soundtrack of their own thats a lot heavier on economics and a little lighter on identity, one that drives that 1/3 number down to, say, less than a quarter, absolutely nothing will change on the unity front. But Biden isnt the guy for all that.

(14,118 posts)Unity has never existed in this country. All we need is a fair vote to enable the majority that are not corrupt to assume power and lead/drag the willing and unwilling into a better future for everyone.

I could get excited about the idealism then. But now I think I was naive. As a white person, I had no clue about the current racism in this country. I didn't understand my privilege and contribution and I don't want to pretend we can be unified without deep structural change. We have candidates who have put forth plans to take concrete steps towards fixing what the front runner formally helped exacerbate. Sincere work towards eradicating the depth and pervasiveness of racism demands that we look at ourselves and our own contributions. Not the usual defense and dismissals.
If unity means going back to pretending we have come a long way since the founding and slavery, I want none of it. People are treated differently and the systemic manifestations should not be ignored.
