As Bernie Sanders Says 'No Apologies' for His Position, 70+ Groups Back Call
for Prisoner Voting Rights
(snip)
America, too, can honor every citizens right to vote and still flourish. Maine, Vermont, and Puerto Rico treat the right to vote as a bedrock democratic principle for all citizens, including those in prison.Advocates, people in prison, and even corrections officials say voting allows incarcerated people to maintain a sense of connection to the community and society at large, which in turn helps prepare them for life after prison. Protecting every Americans right to vote isnt only popular, its also endorsed by those with the most intimate knowledge of our criminal legal system.
This practice has deep-seated roots in our Jim Crow past, and its modern persistence echoes historical pain. Felony disenfranchisement laws gained popularity in the post-Reconstruction era: shortly after black men gained the right to vote, disenfranchisement laws were codified to systematically strip away black votes. States where African Americans made up a greater portion of the prison population were significantly more likely to adopt felony disenfranchisement. As these laws spread, states began creating lists of crimes they believed were most likely to impact black voters. Felony disenfranchisement became a tool to limit the political power of black communities and individuals to elect representatives to advocate for their interests.
Even today, communities of color are disenfranchised at much higher rates than white voters. In the 2016election, 7.4 percent of all African American adults were disenfranchised as a result of a felony conviction, a rate four times higher than the rest of the population. In Kentucky, a full quarter of the black electorate cannot vote today due to felony disenfranchisement. Latinx communities are also disenfranchised at rates greater than the general population. These racial disparities turn whole communities into second-class citizens, undermining faith in the fairness of our government, our elected officials, and the notion that all people are treated equally under the law.
We need a President who will stand up for the right of all Americans to vote. We thus ask each of you to publicly commit to ending felony disenfranchisement and to call for the restoration of voting rights for all citizens, regardless of their criminal history.

(58,785 posts)It's hardly a new issue to a bunch of us, including many in office. I'm just surprised that as a Democrat this issue is new to you. My husband and I have been members of the ACLU for most of the past 3 decades, have known people who've been disenfranchised, and have contacted legislators working for and against this issue before.
But I don't remember Sanders ever rising to visibility on this in the past. I imagine he probably would have been on the right side, but perhaps not "caring" enough to lower himself to join Democrats of past decades in efforts that would require more than his usual +1 vote to the Democratic caucus. One might have thought a person who wants to be president might have tried to rise to leadership at some point, though.
But that was then. It's used used for many decades especially to disenfranchise PoC and low-income groups, and Vermont is a very white state isn't it?
And this is now. No surprise that he's making a public statement (!) at a time when he needs to produce some caring on issues PoC tend to consider their own.

I mind this, Beck, because I take being portrayed as needing enlightenment from him as a profound insult. This disenfranchisement business goes to hugely important core liberal principles.
If you have to deny the strong principles and moral stands of most Democrats to make Sanders look better to the ignorant, what are you doing? Find ways to demonstrate what you see as his superiority that can stand on their own merits and that don't require denying who and what Democrats are. Some achievement in private life perhaps.

(6,073 posts)Hopefully civil rights prevails again, Bernie is leading on that effort. Your social contract with that restriction is not in place in his home state Vermont and nearby Maine. Many countries, including Israel allow prisoners to vote. If minorities are disproportionately imprisoned, it is an unfair standard. They are counted for representation yet not allowed to vote for their Representative.

(58,785 posts)of a sister-in-law of a neighbor apparently finally preaches against Trump, so reportedly she and a couple of friends formed a pro-Sanders group to fight Democrats and their evil socialism from. Yes, I know, but it apparently makes sense to them.
She also doesn't like Jews, and go figure that. My husband is, and according to her our children belong to that "race" also. I've managed not to see her for a few years now, but in the past she's considered Jews necessary for the second coming and to commit genocide against Muslims.
Anyway, Trump's loss is Sanders' gain.

(10,173 posts)But I do agree with him on this. I don't get the fear either, what platform will an especially vicious criminal vote for? Is that the concern?
The right to vote is fundamental, and incarceration should not strip that right. Voting is fundamental to democracy, prisoners still retain constitutional rights even in jail.
This is why the focus ought to be on democracy and rights. And this is where I think Sanders erred in the way he communicated it - by citing the Boston bomber - because it launched a million memes which missed the point and gave Fox News fodder. Another angle he could have used is the way prison populations are used in the drawing up of legislative districts while being denied a fundamental right.
But he is absolutely correct. Once you put limitations on who can and cannot vote - a basic right of every citizen - you can justify preventing even ex felons voting and more, and that's how it becomes a "slippery slope"

(453 posts)I am not for felons still in prison having voting rights...UNLESS they are being counted as part of the population in the state in which they are imprisoned. If they are counted as part of the population for apportionment purposes then they ought to have the right to vote because they are being counted for every other census reason that other citizens are being counted.
