“I think it’s a huge distraction from what we should be talking about as a party,” says former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, one of the other Democrats running for president. O’Malley held a media event Wednesday in front of the gleaming Trump Tower just off the Las Vegas Strip to throw his support behind the Culinary, which is trying to unionize the property.
O’Malley, a progressive, served eight years (2007-15) as Maryland’s chief executive. He – along with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Senators Lincoln Chaffee and Jim Webb, and Clinton – are running for the Democratic nomination.
Afterward, speaking to reporters, O’Malley weighed in on the email controversy.
“I think what you see happening is some of the people in the DNC (Democratic National Committee) are starting to circle the wagons,” he said. “They see that every day the frontrunner’s campaign is defined by the latest allegations of emails.”
His solution: debates and get talking about other issues.
“I think we’re making a horrible mistake as a party if we allowed our contest to be defined by the latest questions of the day about classified email and Benghazi, and all those things,” he said. “We need to talk about the issues that are on the kitchen tables of every American.”
