Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumAndrea Mitchell just told a whopper about Bernie:
Wrapping up a story about Hillary's statement on guns, Mitchell gratuitously added, "Bernie Sanders, of course, long supported by the NRA."
The NRA has long rated Bernie either F or D-. That is NOT support.
Please, people, let Mitchell and MSNBC know how you feel.

(57,936 posts)Here is his record:
https://votesmart.org/candidate/key-votes/27110/bernie-sanders/37/guns
He voted for most of the gun legislation. He voted against the Brady Bill.
Sanders voted for the Manchin-Toomey amendment in 2013, however, which would have expanded background checks, as well as for separate amendments that would have banned assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Sanders has staunchly defended his record. He maintains that his objections to the Brady Bill, for example, were due to the inclusion of a mandatory waiting period for gun purchases, rather than the background checks themselves, and boasts of his D-minus ranking from the National Rifle Association.
As a senator from a rural state with lax gun laws, Sanders has argued that he is uniquely positioned to bridge the divide between gun control advocates and their opponents -- a sentiment he reiterated on MSNBC on Thursday.
What we need, Chris, as a nation, is to get beyond the shouting, Sanders said. Some people want to ban every gun in America and some people believe in nothing at all. I think the vast majority of the American people, as the president indicated, including gun owners -- and I know that's true here in Vermont -- want sensible gun control legislation and they also believe that we should have more access to mental health facilities and counselors than we presently do.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/bernie-sanders-gun-control_56105dade4b0af3706e1181f
Ir should be easier for people involved in explosive situations, marital disputes, etc. to get restraining orders and to get enforcement of those orders. That would not help in the mass shootings, but it would help in other situations.
When I read some of the posts on DU, a liberal site, and feel the anger expressed in them, I think we have a problem that goes way beyond guns. So Bernie's emphasis on mental health is well taken.
There are and have been DUers whose posts indicated in my opinion that they have serious apparently untreated mental health issues. We all have bad days. But to be constantly on edge and on the verge of violence or screaming suggests emotional instability, and that is something we can do something about.
Guns are inanimate objects.

Stop supporting a politician who is great, for me, on all issues but one (and I understand Bernie's vote there, sorry) - and start supporting a politician with a whole list of negatives?
Oh, and war = guns. Guns and bombs. Guns on steroids. FFS, who is kidding who here? Does the DNC really think we are that biddable? Damn. The bullshit is starting early. But - Obama does not get to tell me any damn thing about who to vote for.
Hillary is a hawk - if I had one issue, this would be it. Bernie is the only one to take on the MIC. Continuous war is a sin. The money we spend on killing people could be put to much better use.
But, fracking, TPP, cluster bombs, H-1B visas. Agreed. There are a lot more reasons.

(6,915 posts)About Sanders slams "...why won't you take that as the insult its meant to be?"
There's a million responses from "the NRA in 1990 wasn't the right-wing extremists they are 25 years later in 2015", to "even a broken clock is right twice a day".
But why bother to respond? For all the shit-stirring nobody gives a rat's ass. Progressives aren't so stupid that such a smear will weaken their Sanders support, and I guarantee no conservatives will abandon their support for Sanders because the NRA supported him once in 1990.
So sit back and relax and watch the show. If this reaches critical mass it will be a surprisingly favorable for Sanders, when the feeble attempt to smear him blows up in their face. If you'll pardon the metaphor.

(41,505 posts)Sanders Appalled by Mass-Shootings
(snip)
While there are deep political divisions among Americans on guns, Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday said he believes a consensus can be developed for ways to lessen the likelihood of horrific mass-shootings which have plagued the country, including last weeks murders at a community college in Oregon.
Like the rest of the nation, I am appalled by gun violence in our country and the mass shootings in our churches and colleges, Sanders said. While there is no simple fix, that does not mean we should do nothing. The status quo clearly is not working and people on both sides of this issue cannot simply continue shouting at each other. Nobody wants more mass killings and serious people are going to have to engage in serious discussion.
In my view, there are very concrete steps we can take to lessen the number of tragedies and to make those that happen less lethal, including ideas supported by a majority of gun owners, the senator added.
Sanders said:
We must strengthen and better enforce the instant background check system.
We must close the gun-show loophole, which allows unlicensed dealers to sell guns to people who otherwise would not be able to get them.
We must make straw man purchases a federal crime.
We must ban semi-automatic assault weapons which are designed strictly for killing human beings.
We must recognize that our mental health system is seriously broken. While there has been much talk about mental health parity in our health care system, we are not even close to achieving it. Its past time for a serious discussion about identifying, intervening and treating mental illness and ensuring access to care.
In addition, Sanders said his presidential campaign is assembling a comprehensive package of measures to address gun violence.
As Vermonts lone congressman and as a senator, Sanders consistently supported strong gun safety legislation. As a result, he has a National Rifle Association rating of D-.

It's actually more that 2nd point than the lousy 10mil voters who hold NRA membership cards that slows gun control laws in Congress. Gun control is not a strictly partisan issue anymore. Sure, a lot of the far left wants to throw all the guns in the ocean, but they aren't about to shun Bernie over it.
If anything, such a statement could pick up some of the moderate vote from Clinton. Maybe Sanders supporters don't want them in their camp or something, but if I were advising Bernie I'd play both sides of this by calling for measured steps that don't threaten personal ownership. That's what Clinton will probably do.

(18,628 posts)He represents Vermont which on one hand has a sporting economy, but on the other it's New England, so I'm not as certain of his position. I suspect he's played both sides of it in the past to keep his job in the Senate.
I think Hillary's New York roots and the Assault Weapon Ban define Clinton pretty well on gun control. Personally, as a gun owner myself, I'm not with Hillary (or half of DU) on this particular issue.

(45,251 posts)It endorsed him ONCE, 25 years ago, before he got to Congress and has rated him, on the basis of his votes in the House and Senate, D- to F ever since. Her statement was a lie, plain and simple.
She lied about NRA support, not the "nuances" of Sanders' acts and omissions.
Also, you ducked my question about your standard for a lie by a journalist about a candidate for POTUS during primary season.

(45,251 posts)No one has been able to defeat him in 25 years. It's Hillary who is the weathervane.
As far as not wanting moderates to support him, don't be silly. People want as many as possible to support Sanders. About 25% of Vermont's Republicans have been voting for him all along and no one has a problem with that except the Republican politicians.

(18,628 posts)Instead trying to get Mitchell to rescind her statement, as this thread seems to demand, the campaign should just not respond, as I suspect may happen. MSNBC isn't going to retract anything anyway, but no one has ever lost an election by at least appearing to support the 2nd amendment.
While many may want Bernie to pass a liberal purity test, it might not be a bad idea to say he's the only one on the podium who supports a responsible American's right to defend themselves. Strict gun control is one of several issues I personally part ways with Hillary on.
Having said that, I didn't realize when I commented that this is the Bernie Group. I respect the sanctuary and want to be clear that I didn't intend to malign him. I just don't think this will hurt his run in any way. He could clarify his position, but I'd just keep talking about cleaning Wall Street.

I don't know if that is so, but this is a Democratic primary and a popular Democratic President has just asked the nation to become one issue voters.
Having said that, I didn't realize when I commented that this is the Bernie Group.Yes, it is. And, given all you've posted about supporters of Sanders, I was surprised you posted here.
I just don't think this will hurt his run in any way.
Again, that is simply not the standard to apply when we are talking about a journalist lying about the second place candidate in a Presidential primary.

(27,670 posts)Forrester polled a panel of 4,709 individuals in the US and found just 46% of respondents between the ages of 18 and 88 years old watched linear TV in a typical month. It's worth bearing in mind this research shows the results of a survey, rather than actual consumption data, but the shift is interesting nonetheless.
A small majority of Generation X and Baby Boomers said they watched linear TV, but that average was dragged down by millennials.

Get them out of your head.

(45,251 posts)You may feel otherwise, and that's fine.
BTW, I bet people lie to pollsters about how much TV they watch because they are embarrassed by how much they actually do watch.
