Bernie Sanders

At a Nevada rally for Bernie Sanders last night, the Democratic hopeful focused on issues of police brutality and civil rights.
One particular area where Sanders focused in his speech was on the private prison industry. If he has anything to say about it, the democratic candidate said, he will end the for-profit, private prison industry.
When congress reconvenes in September, I will be offering legislation, I will be introducing legislation, which takes corporations out of profiteering from running jails.
As you might imagine, this drew huge applause from the crowd.
Watch the video below, or click here for the exact minute mark in the speech.
Recently, the private prison industry threatened to sue states unless they get more inmates for free labor.
Freedom is apparently bad for business. Thats the message from the private prison industry which is threatening to sue states if they dont start locking more people up.

(1,061 posts)You can bet, despite any actions and proposals, that plenty of people will still think Bernie is tone deaf to social justice.
Prisons demand more inmates, state legislators demand law enforcement 'find' more crime, PoC are disproportionately targeted and imprisoned. The cycle has existed and its architects seek to embed it further - who do you believe will actively try to change it for the better? Who is for the status quo?

The PPI is evil in SO many ways, yet it's thrived in the shadows for
far too long. This will call voters' attention to it, at the very least.
GO BERNIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(5,069 posts)on technology was that it replaced labor with machines. What better way to 'manage' the surplus labor than to put them behind bars.
I believe and I truly hope more economists address this issue and how the reliance on technology has also destroyed our eco-system. Call me a luddite but I see value in manual labor and investing more in the humanities and less in quick fix technologies.

Bernie is, as usual, absolutely right. No one should profit from the incarceration of others. Private prisons must be made ILLEGAL. They are, by their very existence, corrupting the system and completely unAmerican.
this perspective on this issue crosses party lines too.

Ah, the top two are headquartered in the South. Interesting how they found a way to reintroduce virtual slave labor.

(4,775 posts)Wackenhut was one of the most corrupt corporations of all time, involved in tons of shady covert stuff, it was a cottage industry for some to uncover their activities. If Octafish is around I'm sure he can elaborate better than I can, but that's seriously messed up.
