A lot of excitement from 15 NOW PDX, the movement to raise the min. wage to $15. Looks like they are putting on the ballot in Ore and are very excited about Bernie's visit, who supports that raise in the min wage.

(45,251 posts)I am so thrilled that Bernie is drawing crowds. The more Americans hear what he has to say, the better. There will be no unringing that bell.

I don't like the Moda Center very well, but sure will appreciate the larger crowd it will hold!

(322 posts)my RSVP says it was to be held at Memorial Coliseum, which is a couple of hundred feet from the Moda Center...and if the Eastside street car was running, one can take Max or the Streetcar to the Rose Quarter, where both arenas are easy walking distance from either form of transit...

(50,130 posts)I think the capacity there is about 22,000.

(19,537 posts)I think that the logistics would be a lot harder to shift at this point and not buy as much additional crowd there. With the Moda Center right next door to the first venue, the logistics of switching to get a lot bigger capacity was worth that move. And the crowd would have to shift gears a lot with their transportation plans, meal plans, etc. too. Many will probably attend the First Unitarian church Move to Amend lecture by David Cobb right across the river at 2 PM (that got moved from 7 PM to work with Bernie's rally then).
Maybe if Bernie is on the same path that Obama was when he came here in 2008, he could fill the park the way Obama did with 75k people then.
I think 20k at the Moda Center with perhaps even 2k outside like them having 3k waiting outside in Madison Wisconsin when they filled the 10k capacity facility there would be just the message they'd want to send. And they were already planning for ways to handle overflow crowds outside of both current venues here, if we get 22k, that 2k will be taken care of too outside the Moda Center.
But keeping thinking of growing the crowd bigger is a good notion to have!

(19,537 posts)... if he came back and was in a very pivotal position in the race then. I think Portland would then come out like they did for Obama then!
But I think for a campaign like Bernie's now, when we would have had him down in L.A. for a debate instead of here in Portland on the 9th like what happened in the 2007 election, that it is important that he gets huge crowds now as much as possible to show the momentum to counteract the corporate media's attempts to downplay his following moreso than they would have done to any candidate back in 2007 (I still believe that insiders knew that Edwards was a short timer, even if he was the candidate with the largest following that was actually speaking substantively then on progressive issues of inequality, etc.)

(35,773 posts)In fact, the city is filled with events on Sunday, including Bridge Pedal and the Grand Opening for Tillikum Crossing. Sanders' organization should have picked a different day.

(35,773 posts)Quite frankly, I don't understand why the Sanders campaign thought it was a good idea to have an event in town this Sunday. There is so much going on already. Bridge Pedal, The Bite, the Grand Opening of Tillikum Crossing, a probable sell out Thorns game. I don't get it.

(35,773 posts)Adding to traffic jams on one the day when several bridges are closed for half the day was probably not a great strategy, however.

(35,773 posts)Sunday in Portland includes Bridge Pedal, The Bite, the Grand Opening of Tillikum Crossing, and a near sell out Thorns game. This was not a good day for Bernie to add to the town's plate. How did his planners miss all that?
Arugula Latte
(50,566 posts)so they probably just had to pick a day and go with it. If it's not the Rose Festival it's the Blues Festival or the Brew Fest or some major bike ride closing bridges, etc. For example, last weekend the Flugtag was in town, drawing tens of thousands of people and so much boat traffic they had to shut it down early.

(35,773 posts)Saturday would have been far better, however. In fact, every weekend coming up would have been better.

(50,566 posts)There was a lot of talk at that time about "white people won't vote for Obama" and then a vast sea of white people showed up to support him.
Cracklin Charlie
(12,904 posts)It was his courage. He put his family on that stage in that sea of people.
I was immediately struck with the impression that this man was not afraid to do big things. I suddenly knew that a time would come when schools, hospitals, bridges, and buildings would be named after him. To make that happen, a person has to do things that affect many large communities of people in a positive manner.
I am not at all surprised that that is exactly how his time in office has turned out; but, I am shocked that the Republicans did so much to help him stamp his name on history (i.e. Obamacare lol, idiots!).

We've passed the 10K mark, but Portland still has a slight lead so let's get moving! RSVP right now!
Many people have made events pages on Facebook for Bernie's rally on August 8th. This is confusing to a lot of people, that is NOT where we should be RSVP'ing. The official Bernie site needs to see the numbers and they are not being transferred from the Facebook pages. The local Facebook pages are not run by the Bernie Sanders campaign. We're all just local folks and supporters. None of us have any hand in the production of the event. We are not "official". So please, be sure to RSVP on the OFFICIAL Bernie site so they know we're coming! I'll see you guys there!
