FYI. An interesting post by Skinner in ATA

Skinner (61,542 posts)
1. Advocating third party will definitely get people banned during the general election.

Simply stating an intent, in a polite way that does not tear down the nominee -- Not sure.

Strictly speaking, yes, the TOS states that members are never permitted to advocate third party. "Never" means never and does not have an exception for primary season. But when faced with the prospect of banning half of my members, most of whom are going to regain their sanity once the primary is over and will undoubtedly do the right thing, we decided to give people the benefit of the doubt and let them stick around.

True story: I have sent a number of alerts on the third-party advocacy thing, and I have stated in the alert that it is a clear TOS violation, and on more than one occasion smug jurors tell me to "go read the TOS."

I am convinced that almost here nobody knows what the TOS actually says. It's kind of like the Bible -- it says whatever people think it says, and reading it is totally beside the point. That is something we are going to change once the primaries are over. I suspect some people will be shocked to learn what it actually says
.

Please keep that in mind if you want to stick around once the primary is over. .

1. Hmmmmm

I get the TOS and have to my knowledge not violated it. I will however, vote for whomever I believe to be the best person for the job and I may skip a few spots on the ballot. What others do is of course up to them.

That said, I find the tone of the statement... "But when faced with the prospect of banning half of my members, most of whom are going to regain their sanity once the primary is over and will undoubtedly do the right thing, we decided to give people the benefit of the doubt and let them stick around."

A bit condescending....

40. I agree, that tone ... Smh

That is precisely why I walk on eggshells around here. Leaders establish, directly control and indirectly influence the culture of a place, organization, group or what have you.

That Skinner uses that tone does not engender confidence. It's one thing when DU'ers or even admin do it but from him, it means so much more.

It's not irrational to be against Hillary, despite popular consensus over there. The scales at DU are not balanced at all - it's clearly not neutral.

19. Well that's sad to hear, too.

When so many threads have gone on for days involving language used to disparage every other group/issue, you'd think mental illness that affects so many in one way or another - including here - would be an important group to protect from it. Some people don't realize how triggering any stigmatizing language can be, especially for anyone already fighting depression and the self-worth issues that come along with it. I guess you have to be there .....

I don't know exactly what WillyT wrote but if it was sterotyping an entire group it didn't meet the TOS

Funny...it sure has been looking like it would be MORE than half the members, that would be eliminated in The Extermination.

So one way or another, you will get in line, change your tone and cast your Constitutional Right of Voting for who you are told (choice is not an option)...if you wish to stay on the site.

I doubt any of that will help many of us regain our "sanity" (and here I've always thought that we were the same ones.)

I am still working to get progressives into position to reclaim the Democratic Party back from the Goldwater Republicans. They don't get to pretend they share FDR's legacy when they completely oppose it and want to deconstruct it.

I support the Progressive Caucus of the Democratic Party. It's the largest caucus in Congress, except for the two major party caucuses.

30. Of course Skinner and other DUers supported Third Party recent Republican Charlie Crist

over his Democratic challenger because they were super dooper sure Crist would beat Rubio. Charlie of course said Palin was more qualified to be President than Obama. He was a Third Party Candidate. So 'never' in the TOS is a term of art meaning 'depending on financial need'.

32. Personally

I would never state anything about voting third party.

It is DemocraticUnderground.

How I will end up voting in November?

All I can say is I will not vote Hillary.

46. Well, if we can't speak our mind, what's the point of sticking around?

I don't care if there's a "D" or an "R" in front of a politicians name. If a democrat acts like a republican, I'm calling it out. If that gets me banned, oh well.

54. OH then there is this, as I've seen posted numerous times...

It's a private site and the owners can set the rules/get rid of anyone they want.

Hmmm...so that means that those who purchase a "Star" membership and/or buy Hearts...don't mean squat, other than being a source of money?

59. Banning 85% us, won't be good for business.

I'm stoked that most of us here seem willing to stand up for our ideals, rather than blindly falling in line like they expect us to do.

60. I've seen a couple of these TOS alerts I think. And funny thing it's not jury job to police TOS

To quote from the manual:

The DU Administrators oversee the operation of the website. They enforce the website Terms of Service, occasionally review decisions made by the MIR Team or Forum Hosts, and deal with long-term members who cause problems. There are three Administrators and they can be contacted here.

About DU Juries

Democratic Underground eschews civility rules in favor of some very simple, very broad Community Standards:

It is the responsibility of all DU members to participate on our discussion forums in a manner that promotes a positive atmosphere and encourages good discussions among a diverse community of people holding a broad range of center-to-left viewpoints. Members should refrain from posting messages on DU that are disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

It was made very clear when DU3 came online that the jury enforces community standards. And apparently half the community has a different standard; follow the party or follow the party historical ideals.

62. I see plenty saying they won't vote for HRC

I've seen some say they would write Bernie in, which I guess would be a violation. But saying you won't vote for her isn't the same as advocating a third party. Skinner's post is condescending, to say the least. I'm sure he doesn't want to ban half the members because ultimately that would be money out of his pocket.

76. That's ok. When Bernie wins the primary, the TOS will not affect anyone that I can

think off, offhand. I believe he was referring to those voters not currently affiliated with the party. Since their choice will be represented, it seems moot. ? Not sure. Either that it or will be Debbie-gate, redux.

77. Regain their sanity

My only issue with this is that most of the people he is talking about actually support the candidate that reflects what a Democrat should be. How can anyone think a Democrat is someone that supports war, regime change, fracking, free trade, private prisons, $12 minimum wage, and not supporting LGBT equal rights for a majority of her life. Oh, and is against single payer insurance.

This is like a bad dream. We are criticized for wanting the best for everyone in this country or at the very least taking care of our fellow citizens. We feel this way, because it is the right thing to do.

Sorry, if we do not support moderate republicans. I thought this was Democratic Underground, not DINO Underground.

With that being said, I am supporting down ticket democrats and Bernie Sanders. Will not vote for Hillary along with my wife and my elderly parents. That is because we are Democrats and only support Democrats.

84. Bump, I asked Skinner/Admins a post primary question & it was answered.

I've been a member here for a long time. Not since the start, but too long to just bag it. I remember when DU was more liberal than I was by a country mile. It's been very disheartening for me to see the sharp rightward swing it's taken, not to mention the intent to stifle open discussion. We all come from different backgrounds, and different parts of the country. Regardless who are nominee is, we are going to differ on policy. Our local/state candidates are going to run on different issues, and in many cases - those are likely going to differ in some way, or be more relevant in others. So I basically asked what the tolerance of those discussions would be, because I do believe these are able to be discussed, and I received a response. It's long - but I didn't want to leave anything to chance in my post. Here you go.

I suspect some people will be shocked to learn what it actually says

I suspect he'll be shocked at how large the exodus will be from DU (either by choice as soon as the primaries are over, by banning, or simply by eventually being driven away.

97. The answer was arrogant in my opinion

To use the word sanity in any realm to describe a political disagreement is egregious. It is telling someone because they disagree with you that you are not worthy of having an opinion.

It makes me understand why he supports the arrogant, dishonest, and condescending candidate. Way to go on throwing around your wallet Skinner!
