(10,123 posts)When you get outside the USA, nobody easily has their thumb on the scale of worldwide media like they do with the six companies who control 90% of US media.
It's through that worldwide media that much of the rest world gets to assess Bernie v Hillary.
I think it's a lot more fair & objective media than what American media are providing to Americans.
When the case of the two candidates are fairly presented, I think you get results like the above.
I think Obama won in a landslide outside of the USA. The USA is one of the countries in the world where Obama is least popular. Once again FOX News and corporate media within the US has a lot to do with that.
I do not think that was the case in the 60s or 70s - nearly as much. It seems to have increased as control of the US media got consolidated.

(11,546 posts)I think living in countries predominantly where they have healthcare for all, free tuition, great transportation systems, a focus on clean energy and union strikes are encouraged (Je t'aime, France!!) has had a great effect on them. Oh - and more objective news!!!
When I was in Europe just over a month ago (wow, time flies!), I would watch a bit of their news everyday and they covered our elections better than we did. They showed ALL of the candidates and hadn't tuned it into the Trump and Hillary show. Sigh...

(602 posts)I'm so happy to see that -- and a little surprised. I joined an ex-pats group here about 6 months ago, and since then I've met only Hillary supporters. I need to find out where the 71-percenters are!

(602 posts)They're still accepting emailed ballots until 6 pm EST tonight, and regular mailed ballots have until March 14 to arrive and be counted. And of course, there are still a few primaries tonight. But I like to preliminary results!

(602 posts)But I don't think there's a way to know how many people actually vote in the DA primary until all the votes are counted. You have to be a DA member to vote, but that doesn't mean you have to vote in the DA primary. You can vote in your home state primary instead. (And I've seen at least two sources claim you might be able to vote in both!) So the 5000 votes so far could be the upper end, or it could be a small fraction.
This was my first time voting this way, and because of my schedule, I had to opt for mailing it in. My partner went the email route. We both received confirmation that our ballots were received. But what I found a little disturbing is that the ballots go a DA rep who gets to see who you are and whom you voted for. There's no privacy. If that rep was less than honourable -- and I have no reason to believe anyone is; I'm just saying IF -- then it seems like it would be pretty darned easy to flip the votes. Presumably it would be caught on audit, but who would call for an audit? Just seems a little too open to potential abuse.
Of course if Bernie wins, I'll naturally assume everything was done to the letter.
Democrats Ascendant
(601 posts)I'm not disputing that Sanders may have won Dems Abroad, but it's not at all clear that this is in fact the case from the source you cite (Wikipedia). There are dozens and dozens of contest sites, but only a fraction are reporting results. Those reporting are overwhelmingly for Sanders, however.
Anyhow, the total number of voters (less than 5,000 reported so far) is insanely disproportionate to the number of available delegates: 13 pledged and 8 supers. The range is between 26 ballots in Pattaya to 630 in London.
Official results to be released on March 21, once all absentee and mail-in ballots are counted.

(1,268 posts)When the Consulate called and told me my ballot had arrived, I went to vote that same day and turned in right back in to them. But Consulate Officer told me it still may take 2 weeks to arrive in U.S. I was not happy about that. But I think I did get mine in with time to spare. I even called election office to verify it had been received.
So as an FYI, make sure you tell your election office you will be out of the country and to send your ballot to the closest Embassy. And also let Embassy know to contact you when it arrives. But your supposed to check in with them anyway.

(17,187 posts)Something like 23,000 voters, IIRC. What this may prove is that those who choose to live and work overseas are not a neutral sample (one could find reasons for that a priori, for example that people choose to live and work overseas because they are dissatisfied with conditions in the U.S.). It's a nice thing to happen, but I doubt it is indicative of anything general. More delegates are always good to have, though.
Interesting that there are enough expats to be equivalent to Vermont or Alaska, though.

(36,988 posts)On the way
I close the door
Streets seem to be crying
Clouds seem to be fleeing
I step on the bus
People seem to watch me
But I want to avoid them
Before they see me
The days are gone and forgotten
When you didnt forget my birthday
You unconditionally chose me
I see the fields
Passing me by, houses
Its quiet behind the windows
Who can see me
in blue-lit trains
Your heart is so close to me
But it doesnt beat
And these days are lost and forgotten
Your black hair and your smile
That you were everything for me
Its still so deep inside of me

From wikipedia:
A Global Town Hall online videoconference was held on February 21.[2] The Sanders and Clinton campaigns participated...
The Clinton campaign was represented by Jake Sullivan and Madeleine Albright[3][4][5]. Hillary Clinton was absent from the town hall, and instead attended a private fundraiser in Atherton, California, in the home of Sukhinder Singh Cassidy.[6][7]
The Sanders campaign was represented by Bernie Sanders.[8]
