Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumA strange moment in the debate.
Did anyone else hear this portion of the debate as I did?
The last woman to ask questions asked Bernie something about whether he believed in God or something of that nature.
Then she asked Hillary whether Hillary prayed.
In the answer, I thought I heard Hillary say that she had attended the woman who asked the questions' church?
Did I hear wrong?
How did Hillary know what church this questioner attended?
And if I heard correctly, why was a woman from a church that Hillary had attended asking a question?
And if I heard correctly, how and why did Hillary recognize this woman as the member of a church that Hillary had attended?
My husband noticed the same strange thing.
I noted that after the Democratic debate in which Bernie Sanders and Hillary discussed Kissinger, Bernie's remarks about how he would not include Kissinger as an adviser to his presidency were not included in some of the published versions of the transcript.
I wonder whether CNN will take that remark by Hillary out of the transcript.
Did anyone else notice this exchange and statement by Hillary?
If so, how do you explain it?
Was this debate pre-arranged in part?
Was it so to speak fixed?
Or is there some other explanation?

(20,043 posts)It was this longwinded question that went into far more detail than a QUESTION should. Then Hillary had an equally long winded answer. It really sounded set up.

(7,499 posts)but my husband thought Hillary said something along the lines of "I go to your church". How would she know what church the woman attends?

(1,508 posts)and immediately felt as though the person asking the question was a plant. I distinctly remember hearing Hillary Clinton say words to this effect. As you know I have attended prayer services with you at your church and have even led some of them. And then went on to say words to this effect. When I pray I pray for people whose names I know....strange indeed.
It appears this isn't unusual:

(3,411 posts)just to make sure any fundies that didn't know about it got the picture. You know, he's the 'Other' - not one of us kind of thinking. And yes, there are fundies on the dem side too. It shows she hasn't learned a damn thing since her last run at the brass ring. Nothing is out of bounds in her quest for the WH. Despicable and low, that's Hillary.
That was her Obama=Muslim moment ... as far as she knows.

CNN should be ashamed of itself for asking a religious question during a presidential debate.
That question was out of place.

(3,017 posts)But I thought both candidates answered it well and no damage was done.
As much as I would love to see one candidate say "we have separation of church and state in this country, we go by the Constitution and my religion or lack of it is nobody's damn business", it's never going to happen.

(3,411 posts)I'm agnostic/atheist so I don't care about any of that. It made my stomach churn to listen to Clinton sucking up. Bernie, a good answer I can live with. I remember the same kind of crap pulled on Kennedy when he ran.
I was raised in a Southern Freewill Baptist fundie clan, and I know a dog whistle when I hear one. And that whistle was an inartful foghorn.

Good catch! Wonder if anyone in the media will bring it up.
Probably not.

(36,988 posts)Entrenched anti-Semitic views very rare among whites and Asians, common among blacks and Latins
ADL surveys show that approximately 12 percent of Americans hold deeply entrenched anti-Semitic views. However, over 30% of African Americans and Latinos hold such views. Given that they are almost 30% of the population, this suggests that of the 12% of Americans who hold deeply entrenched anti-Semitic views, 9% or so are African Americans or Latinos. This means, in turn, of the 70% or so of the population that is not African American or Latino, only 3% hold deeply entrenched anti-Semitic views. Put another way, less than 5% of whites, Asians, and others (including Native Americans) combined hold deeply entrenched anti-Semitic views, compared to over 30% of African Americans and Latinosor at least thats the difference in percentages of those willing to express anti-Semitic attitudes to pollsters. Regardless, it seems odd given these numbers that Jews seem especially concerned about mostly phantom anti-Semitism emanating from white evangelical Christians, while being less concerned about anti-Semitism in core Democratic constituencies. But, as Ilya pointed out a few years back, many studies show that people tend to devalue or ignore any information that makes their political adversaries look good, while overvaluing anything that looks bad.

Its an inconvenient truth that hasn't been discussed
on this board or by the media but it is real ..
The newer data shows that it is improving over all if you read the update in the article

(31,085 posts)COOPER: Denise has a question for Secretary Clinton. Denise
QUESTION: Yes. Secretary Clinton, during our church services, we pray for the president of the United States, we pray for the armed forces, we pray for all civil authorities, three times during our liturgy. And we give thanks to them. We pray for our loved ones. We pray for our enemies. To whom and for whom do you pray?
CLINTON: Well, I have been several times in your services and have joined in those prayers and have also been privileged to lead them in some settings. I pray very specifically for people whom I know by name. People who either have gone through or are experiencing difficult times, illness, divorce, death, disappointment, all of the life experiences that confront most of us.
I pray for the will of God to be known that we can know it and to the best of our limited ability, try to follow it and fulfill it. I have said many times that, you know, I am a praying person, and if I haven't been during the time I was in the White House, I would have become one. Because it's very hard to imagine living under that kind of pressure without being able to fall back on prayer and on my faith.
So I do pray for people in authority. I try to think about what they are going through, even when I disagree with them. Trying to find some common ground, some common understanding that perhaps can make me more empathetic. I don't always succeed. I will tell you that.
So I pray on a pretty regular basis during the day, because I need that strength and I need that support. And especially when you are in the position that I'm in and that Senator Sanders is in, where you are asking people to vote for you, to give you the most important job, not only in our country, but I would argue in the world.
I think humility is one of the most important attributes that you bring to both that seeking and then if you're fortunate enough, to that holding of office and that's what I will try to do.

(16,350 posts)If this woman was a plant, why did Hillary have such a weak response?
Was this questioner (or question) chosen to highlight that Bernie is Jewish? Why? Is someone trying to ignite antisemitism?
And why is such a STUPID question allowed in the first place?

(33 posts)Yes, my spouse and I both heard EXACTLY what you did, and wondered what it all could mean. And, yes, came to same conclusion you did, that this was prearranged, the questioner, the questions, and the "gotcha" for Bernie with Anderson's second "gotcha" follow-up. We wonder if this is the beginning of the Clinton-backed/instigated whisper campaign about Sanders Jewish heritage?? So, glad to find your post, it took many different searches online to find SOMEONE who heard and sensed what we heard and sensed...no one else seems to be discussing this in mainstream media or on facebook. We don't twitter, is it on twitter yet, and if not, get it on there NOW!!

(2,212 posts)... it's worse than I thought. I heard it last night and was convinced I'd heard it incorrectly, and that what Clinton had said was that she was from the same denomination as the questioner (Methodist). But looking at the transcript, Clinton explicitly states that she has attended the same church and the same services as the questioner: "Well, I have been several times in your services and have joined in those prayers and have also been privileged to lead them in some settings." What the heck?!
The other thing that has me shaking my head is Hillary's statement that she prays "on a pretty regular basis during the day." Really? So, like every three hours, Hillary is bowing her head in prayer? Color me cynical, but I find that hard to believe. This struck me as yet more pandering, from the Queen of Pandering.

(21,805 posts)Hillary knew the "question" was coming, and had the practiced answer all ready. If she went to this lady's church, it was to recruit someone to play that role in the farce.
Definite plant so she could jump on the Good Christian soapbox. And point out that Bernie is Jewish.

(84,711 posts)That question was submitted by someone who was planted. But, by who? CNN Management....a Staffer or Anderson Cooper?
Since I've thought Cooper did a pretty fair job along with Don Lemon...I'm thinking it was "Management/Staffer."
Aren't all those questions reviewed and pre-selected to prevent disruptors?
