Bernie Sanders puts 20 staffers in state, opens Seattle office

The 2016 presidential campaign is on its way to Washington state.

Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders added a campaign office in Seattle on Sunday and has 20 paid staffers in the state preparing for the March 26 caucuses. Those workers have begun canvassing and phone-banking.

Judging by the volume of campaign donations that residents have committed to Sanders, he already has a strong base in this state.

“We have a ton of supporters here who have been active and volunteering for us even before we got on the ground,” said Joan Kato, who helped lay the groundwork for the state operation and is now going to work at the campaign’s national headquarters. The campaign expects more office openings in the coming days.

Hi--I'm emailing you because you wound up in my address book and live in Washington State. This is the only email you will get from me on this subject. Democratic party caucuses will be held March 26, 1916 at 10am. I am supporting Sanders because is is the best on issue of concern to me--defending and expanding Social Security, Medicare for All, reducing income inequality, a $15/hour minimum wage, reducing our military footprint and ending the War on Some Drugs. For a more details look at his platform, look here https://berniesanders.com/issues/

In my canvassing so far, I often hear "I like Sanders better on the issues, but Clinton is more electable." You'd think that given Clinton's far superior name recognition that would be the case, but in fact most polling in matchups against Republicans, Sanders does much better against Republicans. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/2016_presidential_race.html Trump is a very big concern--what will Clinton do if he runs to her left on the Iraq war and the Trans Pacific Partnership?

He has so far won independents by very large margins, who now account for 40% of voters, as oppossed to the Democrats' 30%.. Winning the general election will turn on appealing to independents. http://dailycaller.com/2016/02/17/national-polls-suggest-that-bernie-sanders-may-be-more-electable-than-hillary-clinton/

And then there is the youth vote, which he wins by overwhelming margins. Typical is a 26 year old woman who organized a SE Seattle Sanders group. She had never before voted at the time, being a couple of weeks too young in 2008 and didn't see any reason for it since then. I convinced her to look up info on the candidates in Seattle's city council District 2 and also to vote for whoever the Democratic nominee is. I think many alienated young voters will do that, but that is ALL they will do--no canvassing or making small donations. Millennials have displaced Baby Boomers as the largest voting bloc, and will be the inevitable source pool for our future officeholders.

And then there's socialism, socialism, socialism!!! We seem to have sruvived eight years of a socialsit president just fine. Also a Kenyan Muslim, to hear the Republicans tell it. Getting real here, since 1980 "socialism" has just been a Republican snarl word to denigrate an and all public goods (except for the ones they personally benefit from).

I know some of you don't like Democrats much better than Republicans and will vote for Jill Stein--which probably won't make much difference as our state is so blue.

Convinced? Check out information about the campaign here. https://berniesanders.com/

The new campaign office in Seattle is at 617 E. Pike St (corner of Pike and Boylston), and will be open from 10A to 9P most days. Email Carly Rodman for more information [email protected]

The Washington State Democrats have a web page with the most relevant caucus information. Most of the caucus location sites should be entered by now. Pre-registration will save you a lot of time at sigh-in. https://www.demcaucus.com/register

Only 17? You may still caucus in Washington if you will be 18 years old by November 8, 2016. If you are a college student not living in your home state, you can vote for Bernie in either your home state or in the state in which you are attending school.

Where is your precinct? The link at the WA State Democrats site locates you by the last voting address in the party database. If you have moved, the Sanders campaign locator is much better, because it goes only by the address you enter. https://vote.berniesanders.com/WA/

There is a 2 page surrogate affidavit form, if you cannot attend in person because of religious observance, disability, military service or work schedule. Mailing address and fax information is at the bottom of the second page. It must be received by March 18, 2016 so that there is time to distribute the forms to the right precicnts.
