Stress eating, weight gain issues etc....

I've been stress eating the past 2 years, as my husband's illnesses have gotten worse. He is not able to drive, is on oxygen 24/7, and must use a wheelchair outside of the house. I find myself binging on carbs, sometimes in the middle of the night when unable to sleep. That scares me a great deal. Have been looking into Overeaters Anonymous; Weight Watchers just made me feel guilty and more fixated on food. Has anyone out there had success with OA?

1. I understand your plight.

But Weight Watchers does NOT fixate on food, but focuses on BEHAVIORS instead. Food is always handy, but the choices we make is what matters. WW from my experience these past 9 years never made me feel guilty or shameful. I was in control of my behaviors. Being back to Free Lifetime has had its challenges, but I have gotten through them with WW.

My husband has been having numerous health issues this year as well, with 4 hospital trips lasting days, and finally getting the pacemaker sooner than later. The stress on me has been great. My food choices whole eating out have been in accordance to my plan and tracked everything. Stress often causes me not to eat much at all, but have control at least. I walk a lot, which is a stress reliever.

I have no experience with Overeaters Anonymous. I am also sorry your husband's health has not been good. Taking care of you is important so that you and your health do not break down. There are groups that can help you come to terms with behaviors, learn healthier eating habits, better cooking habits, as well as make lifestyle changes that help alleviate stress and work for you. For me, WW is a lifestyle, not a diet.

2. Thank you, I hope your husband's health improves, too. When I did

WW I felt the chronicling of my daily eating habits on the app was a struggle. Friends of mine with who I did in person meetings, seemed to focus on how to “cheat" instead of lifestyle changes.

I do agree with you pointing out that walking is a stress reliever. I work full time in a stressful job as a computer analyst. I'm fortunate to be able to work from home, but I do see a need to get out more frequently for exercise. I may look into getting some counseling for my stress and anxieties which seem to be my overeating triggers.

You are spot on that us caretakers need to take care of US TOO! Thanks again for the suggestions and insight!

3. No worries. Been there, done that.

Having outlets is important as well. Walking a couple of miles at a comfortable pace works wonders. Also talking with someone about your fears and anxieties is not a sign of weakness, but of inner strength.

Just keep in mind, what we do in life requires a decision, then be accountable for that decision. I have learned over the years to not spend so much time beating myself up. Life is too short. You husband needs you. YOU needs you.

5. Am going to test for that since I am of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry and I also have frequent

digestive upset. Could be a form of non Celiac gluten sensitivity, too. Our grains today are often GMO and pesticide tainted, so I've been buying all organic for a while now.

Oh, and welcome to DU! It's a great place for fun, support and friendship. Also, aside from politics, there are so many diverse interest groups 😊
