An Implantable Patch Would Be Able to Maintain Blood Glucose Levels Automatically

Researchers have developed an implantable artificial pancreas which can continuously monitor glucose of the patients with Type 1 diabetes, and automatically release insulin when needed.

The Type 1 condition in diabetes arises when the pancreas of the patient stops producing enough insulin to keep blood sugar at normal levels.

Patients with Type 1 diabetes know that living with it is difficult. They need to monitor their insulin level every day and then by calculation, inject insulin to maintain their blood sugar level. The cumbersome daily process is too much for patients and there was a need for a more convenient way to control blood sugar.

The researchers at the University Of North Carolina School Of Medicine have thought of these difficulties and found a way to ease up the diabetic patients. They have developed a device which will function as a pancreas, to monitor the blood sugar level and release insulin automatically, as needed.
