What a psychiatrist learned from 87,000 brain scans

There was no explanation to 9-year-old Andrew's violent behavior until his uncle, Dr. Daniel Amen, was able to use a groundbreaking discovery to change Andrew's life.

1. He's been trying for years to correlate MRI findings with ADHD/ADD...Not sure where that research

stands...

I don't have time to watch, but I'm assuming he found a tumor?

5. The research is bogus

And I am not sure why he had such trouble finding a neurosurgeon to take the cyst out. I think other doctors may not trust his diagnosis.

7. I thought the other doctors were not certain it was related to his behavioral problems...

Which can happen. From what I read it was simply a disagreement on risk vs benefit. Isnít that sort of normal? My friends ex wife went totally nuts from a tumor- it destroyed her inhibitions and conscience. They didnít catch it till it was too late.

8. Could be

Usually they try drugs first or psychotherpay. Maybe that's what they thought he should do. Because, contrary to his talk, nine year old kids do sometimes start hitting for no reason and it's usually a sign of an undiagnosed mental disorder.

12. I read a little more about this

It actually happened over 20 years ago. Things were different then. Less was known about the brain, surgery was riskier. I know when my mother started acting strange a few years ago, they immediately did an MRI. They didn't find anything, but they did say tumors could cause behavior changes.
