all the things little boys would do at that age. I won't use the term "tomboy"--we really need a more progressive word for girls fully realizing their potential sans stereotypes.

Their father would not let them drive a car until they learned how to change a flat tire and change the oil. They all grew up to be independent professional people who could support themselves if they had to.

Why saddle girls (or boys, or non binary kids) with expectations of how to properly perform their gender?

The point is to open them up to experiencing ALL possibilities. Not saddling them with societal expectations as has been the case for, yes, forever.
