Men Who Buy Sex: Who They Buy and What They Know

A fascinating in-depth research study from 2012 of a sample of London men who buy sex. Some relevant excerpts below:

A sample of 103 men in London, England, who used trafficked and non-trafficked women in prostitution
were asked about their experiences and awareness of the sex industry. Almost all (96%) bought sex
indoors. Many reported that they were aware of pimping, trafficking and other coercive control over
those in massage parlour, brothel, and escort prostitution.
These men were frequently aware of the
vulnerability and risk factors for entry into prostitution including childhood abuse, lack of alternative job
choices, coercive control and homelessness.

snip:
Many of the men felt that at various times during prostitution, women had no rights at all.
Attitudes normalising rape were common among this group of men who buy sex in London. Over
half of the interviewees believed that men would ‘need’ to rape if they did not have access to
prostituted women.

There is no evidence supporting the theory that prostitution prevents rape. Experts in rape and other
forms of sexual violence must ensure that myths that prostitution prevents rape are debunked.

snip:
Legalisation and prostitution tolerance zones encouraged men to buy sex. Several men
explained that once having visited areas where prostitution is legal or promoted, they returned to
UK with a renewed dedication to buying sex even if that practice is illegal.

snip:
Many men stated that pornography informed their decisions to request specific acts with
women in prostitution and also with non-prostituting sex partners. Other interviewees stated that
pornography use led to their paying for sex.

1. Thanks for posting

We've had many a discussion on Du about this. The dominant consensus seems to be the consumer's desires come before women's rights, while residents of poor communities where this activity is located are irrelevant to the scenario. Now I'm supposed to believe those same people truly care about income inequality, when from all appearances they seem to care primarily about one man's political fortunes.

3. That same sentiment is conveniently discarded by DU's MRAs when Payday Lending comes up

"the dominant consensus seems to be the consumer's desires..."

That same sentiment is conveniently discarded by DU's MRAs when Payday Lending comes up. Yet when asking about that ethical discrepancy to these little fellas, the only two replies I received were "it's too complicated to explain" and "you can't force me to answer."

So yeah... I think income inequality is merely a sacred cow, convenient to cover up all manner of guilt and shortcomings.

5. And the sudden concern for lewinsky

Consensual relationship where the woman wanted the guy is horrible.

I know they are full of shit when they are outraged by something like that but are just ok with prostitution.

4. This is excellent

One thing I'll be glad for is I can "refocus" (I never really lose focus) on feminism when the primaries are over. Women are still suffering, still fighting for their rights, all over the world.

6. Let's play Jeopardy. The answer is: Zero.

The question: What is the number of times a john has reported a potential instance of sex trafficking?
