There's never been a majority of women that claim the label, and white middle-class feminism has made its share of egregious mistakes when it came to POC, as well as cultural understanding (minus human rights violations-- that's part of what feminism fights against) but I still like the union comparison---in an open shop you get the benefits without paying the dues. People might disdain the label, but they're riding the coat.

I think this speaks to a major cultural struggle today: the willingness to give back and contribute to a society that (as a whole) provided for most everything we have today. I think the conservative wing of this country simply wants to ignore that, which is why Obama's "You didn't build that" comment sparked such an uproar.

6. As someone who sacrificed something of myself for the rights of girls to have high school sports...

and yes, there was sacrifice, in so many unseen ways... the "I'm not a feminist" cutsies make me want to barf on them. They don't deserve the rights we won for them, and I'd love to find a way to take those rights back. Yeah, I'm sure that sounds petty, but it's how they make me feel.

8. I'll be honest here.

When a woman makes a big fuss about her not being a feminist, it raises a red flag with me. My (possibly unfair) first impression is that she is either a religious nutjob, or else a woman with self-esteem issues who is desperate for male attention and approval.

the inequality. I usually chalk it up to having had a privileged life and not aware of "anything" not in their immediate experiences. I too get a little surprised by the "fuss of not being a feminist" too ... so "women are people, too" is controversial?

my daughter, born in 1988, knows feminism because I've taught her..

My sons, raised in the 70's and 80's understand because they lived it with me.

Recently divorced, is looking at "OK Cupid" as a on-line dating site. On her profile she has "feminist (Google it)".--just like that

Love it. I've been married too long to know about on-line dating, but I know people fairly well--She was using me as a second opinion, because she knows this about me. I looked at the two men she is interested in--both well-spoken with an odd lack of bullshit. (well, the kind that hits my bullshit meter anyway-- and trust me I tried hard to find red flags) I'm very interested in how they turn out.

15. interesting. i too have started labeling myself with this.

at thanksgiving someone said something about me being a feminist. i told them. print it on my forehead. cause anyone that cannot handle the word feminist, needs to be aware and stay away. i am just not being accepting.

then again. i have boldly drawn my line with rw'ers and racists and homophobes. even the mild, "i am not really a racist" type while what they say, says otherwise.
