...In browsing through Doctor Gatelys History of Syracuse, I found this entry from 1892:
Suicides, especially among women, are and have been all too common. Quite a number of persons, again mostly women, are taken to Lincoln to the insane asylum.
Most of these women have large families, often several of their children have died, and not infrequently their husband uses alcohol to excess and is a wife beater.
Nowadays we would probably understand that those women had simply lost the ability to cope with a hopeless situation. Back then they were declared insane and shipped away....
