ESPN Panelist: Women Should Try Not To 'Provoke' Domestic Violence (VIDEO)

Provocative "First Take" panelist Stephen A. Smith was discussing the National Football League's decision to suspend Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice for two games, after he was indicted for allegedly physically assaulting his then-fiancee. The suspension was widely panned as lenient.

Smith said during his ESPN appearance that a man has "no business" putting his hands on a woman, but then went on to say that he was raised by women and encouraged the female members of his family to "make sure we don’t do anything to provoke wrong actions."

"I think that just talking about what guys shouldn’t do, we got to also make sure that you can do your part to do whatever you can do to try to make sure it doesn’t happen … but at the same time, we also have to make sure that we learn as much as we can about elements of provocation,” he added. “Not that there’s real provocation, but the elements of provocation, you got to make sure that you address them. Because we’ve got to do is do what we can to try to prevent the situation from happening in any way. And I don’t think that’s broached enough, is all I’m saying."

1. The only way women "provoke" that kind of violence

is by being there. Men who batter women will come up with any excuse they can to absolve themselves of any wrongdoing.

I hope Mrs. Rice sees that video and leaves his violent ass. There is nothing like seeing your unconscious, battered body being dumped out on the sidewalk to be a wakeup call that the next time he will kill.

3. Speaking of provocation

Does this idiot not realize that he has provoked one hell of a lot of people with his stupid remark? If "provocation" is an excuse for violence I would suggest he watch over his shoulder.

4. I feel sorry for all those female members of his family. At the same time, I'm a little annoyed

with them for the fact that they didn't brain him.

10. It's that word "provoke"

I guess that's the problem with the "provocative" clothes that CAUSE RAPE.

12. Yes. She made him. I really wanted to say...

Women, don't hit. That simple. But his wording and you are right.... Provoke/provocative stops that conversation to address this.

17. I remember he made similar comments when Chad (Ochocinco) Johnson got arrested...

... for assaulting his wife Evelyn. So this isn't a first offense for Mr. Smith.

18. and they must remember

not to break the table or the door with their head,
not to bleed on the clean carpet,
not to moan, or cry.

They must not forget
to bear the broken bones with fortitude and secrecy,
to cover the bruises with make-up,
to have the supper ready.

What an absolute sea cucumber this man is

19. Here's another article about it

Once the damage is done, he says. There's only so much that can be done after the fact...once the damage is done.

You get what he's saying here, don't you?

He's not telling men that they shouldn't do this shit. He's not out there advocating that abuse is wrong and violence towards women is never the answer.

No. He's 'educating' women, informing them that there are ways to PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. And those ways are to TAKE CARE NOT TO PROVOKE A MAN.

Take care how? He doesn't say but I'm pretty sure it's 'shut up and put out'.

The 'damage' that he is referring to is not how much the woman physically and mentally suffered and will continue to suffer from all her life.

No, he's referring to the damaging of a man's image and career. That's it. That's what he worried about.

Women, don't piss off your man because if he hits you and the media finds out, he could get in trouble and it will be all your fault!
