Related: About this forumTrayvon Martin's Mom Endorses Hillary Clinton
I hope she has locked down her Facebook page.
Sybrina Fulton, the mother of slain black teenager Trayvon Martin, endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in an op-ed published Monday on CNN.
Fulton wrote that she believed Clinton has what it takes to fight for gun control and "stand up to inaction from Republicans and indifference from the National Rifle Association." She also praised Clinton's ideas for reforms, such as eliminating racial profiling and investing in body cameras for police.
Fulton added that she thought Clinton would uphold President Barack Obama's executive actions on guns and then "go even further."
"I agree with the President: We should only support leaders that fight for common-sense gun reforms," she wrote. "Clinton passes that test."

(23 posts)I believe that Sandra Bland's family has met with Bernie Sanders and has not made an endorsement, but appreciate that fact that Bernie still remembers her and says her name.

Are you making light of the killing of unarmed young black people?
If you aren't please accept my apology in advance as I would hate to be guilty of the exploitation of the suffering of others.
Thank you in advance.
Respectfully,

(146,287 posts)The two things are different. You can't use a non-endorsement of Sanders to belittle an actual endorsement of Clinton. That trick never works, really.

(13,877 posts)thing. I don't want Sandra Bland's parents to endorse Bernie. I would feel the same way, and they may have even talked about it. This is another blatant political trick that, IMO, lowers the level of "endorsement"
It's politics as unusual, at least I can't think of another similar situation...but I could be wrong. Bringing up Trayvon's murder may in fact have the reverse affect, especially for Democrats. The Republicans have been doing it forever. Just more Center-Right politics.

That's a bit cruel if you ask me. I fully respect her right to endorse whomsoever she pleases as is her right under the first amendment to the constitution of the United States.

(30,481 posts)Because the tragedy is happening to all POC. I truly don't get what you are saying in any way. People who have been through tragedy shouldn't endorse? That is what it appears you are saying. Extremely strange to say the least.
POC are going through the tragedy of governmental and societal oppression every day. Their right to free speech doesn't need to be added to it no matter what your feelings are with respect to "tragedy."

(13,889 posts)Ms Fulton presumably chose to author an op-ed article which was published on CNN as opposed to merely signing a generic letter of endorsement. For all I know this might have been suggested by the Clinton campaign, but ultimately the decision about what form her endorsement took was up to her.

(30,247 posts)Trayvon Martin's mother: Why I support Hillary Clinton
With so many of our children's lives on the line or taken, we simply can't afford to elect a Republican who refuses even to acknowledge the problem of senseless gun violence. The rising generation of our young people need a president who will stand up to inaction from Republicans and indifference from the National Rifle Association.
I believe that person is Hillary Clinton.
I know Clinton is tough enough to wage this fight. I've seen her do it for years. As first lady, she advocated for the Brady Bill and convened meetings on school violence. As a senator, she voted to extend the assault weapons ban and against an immunity law that protects irresponsible gun makers and dealers from liability.

Thank you, Ms. Fulton.
