The Clinton Smear Campaign Against Obama
by Stephen Zunes

Unable to find much that Barack Obama himself has said or believes that is particularly alien to the thinking and values of most Americans, Hillary Clinton and her supporters in the media have chosen instead to engage in a campaign of guilt-by-association.

Not surprisingly, right-wing media pundits and prominent Republicans have thrown their weight behind Clinton's efforts, taken advantage of the New York senator's attacks to smear the likely Democratic presidential nominee. For example, North Carolina Republicans are readying a television ad on the eve of that state's primary which includes a photo of Obama and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright together, a video clip of Wright making incendiary comments, with a voiceover telling voters that Obama is "just too extreme for North Carolina."

Clinton's guilt-by-association campaign has even moved to additional degrees of separation. For example, before tens of millions of viewers of the April 16 debate in Philadelphia, Clinton again brought up Obama's alleged "relationships with Louis Farrakhan," despite Obama's repeated and unequivocal denunciations of anti-Semitic statements and other controversial actions by the Black Muslim leader. The apparent extent of Obama's alleged "relationship" with the Nation of Islam leader which prompted Clinton's charge was that a magazine for which Obama's pastor's daughter serves as publisher granted an award to Farrakhan in honor of a successful program he had set up to rehabilitate ex-convicts.

During that same debate, Clinton went so far as to link Obama with the radical Palestinian Islamist group Hamas because the "pastor's pages" section of the weekly bulletin of the church Obama attended once included -- as part of a series of opinion pieces reprinted from various newspapers around the country -- an op-ed column from the Los Angeles Times written by a Hamas leader. Though Obama had already categorically condemned the decision to reprint that article, Clinton told the tens of millions of viewers that "we have a choice who we associate with and who we apparently give some kind of seal of approval to," such as the pastor who -- in Clinton's typically hyperbolic version of events designed to discredit her rival -- was guilty of "giving the church bulletin over to the leader of Hamas."

Hillary Clinton has even attacked Obama for having served on the board of the Chicago anti-poverty group known as the Woods Fund at the same time as former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers. Ayers, who was never convicted of any crime, is now a distinguished professor of education at the University of Illinois-Chicago and served as a former aide to Mayor Richard M. Daley. Clinton apparently saw it as irrelevant that, at the time of Ayers' involvement in the Weather Underground, Obama was just eight years old and living nearly ten thousand miles away in Indonesia. ..................(more)

1. Let us not forget some of the Clinton campaign's literature...

Meanwhile, the Clinton campaign is preparing new mailers to be sent in the coming weeks, making the following examples from 2008 pale in comparison:

20. Where's the equivalent against Bernie?

Interesting that Hillary's campaign isn't doing the same sort of thing when it comes to Bernie. Maybe it's because of the poll numbers. Oh but Obama still overcame Hillary with similar poll numbers. So odd that Bernie is not getting this treatment.

3. The 'Big Lie' is a well known political ploy.

People are more willing to believe the lie if it's so big, so absurd, that they feel no one could actually lie that big - if it's so incredibly implausible, then there must be some truth behind it, because surely no one would say something that on its face sounds so idiotic without there being something to it.

So they want to project Hillary's greatest weakness overtop of Bernie's greatest strength.

12. Exactly

This old ploy won't work this time. Everyone knows HRC and she is overwhelmingly perceived as untrustworthy. Bernie has a consistent career of integrity and locked in his huge fan base last August. Bernie won the social media war 6 months ago.

Any one who doesn't see that Dws and HRC are in cahoots and conspiring to take down Bernie are either in sad denial, in on it, or willing to sell the soul of their convictions and values to win this. they have bought into the race as a big football game instead of facing the realities and tough choices which have to be faced if we are to survive and prosper as a society. Only Bernie and Warren are willing to tackle the big issues of the day head on.

And it was a politically expedient and sensible move. Ever heard of frenemies?

13. Looks like blaming DWS for the Sanders campaign's acts of thievery isn't working. I guess plan B

is to recycle some old anti-Hillary smears as a distraction.

Good luck with that.

19. It's stranger that supporters of the Bernie campaign

going on about honesty and integrity for the past couple of months, abandon that when it suits them as necessary to defend Bernie.

4 of Bernie's people messed up. Yet we see that in the long run, all the talk doesn't matter.

22. I haven't forgotten at all

while some clinton supporters want to dismiss all bernie supporters as Kucinich supporters from 2004/2008.that;s not true.I supported Dead in 2004 and obama in 2008.I voted for gore not nader In 2000.

I remember full well tatics of clintons in 2008.I don't trust her because i can remember history of clintons not just what she says in 2015.

It doesn't matter how you feel about obama now after tpp and middle east devolpments.the clintons were playing racist smear with
him as well as other dirty tricks.Bill Clinton dismissed the SC primary win by obama because Jesse Jackson won In SC during 1984 and 1988.
