PPP: Obama +7 in MICHIGAN

PPP's first likely voters poll in Michigan this year finds Barack Obama with a solid lead in the state, 51-44. That's down a good bit from our last registered voters poll in July which found Obama ahead 53-39. That's a reflection of the fact that the state could be looking at a very different electorate in 2012 than it had in 2008. We find that 34% of likely voters on this poll are Republicans compared to 33% who are Democrats. Exit polls last time showed 41% of voters as Democrats and just 29% as Republicans.

Nevertheless Obama still has a healthy lead. That reflects the fact that despite his ties to the state, Michigan voters just don't embrace Romney. Only 45% have a favorable opinion of him to 49% with an unfavorable one. They don't accept Romney as one of their own either- only 34% consider him to be a Michigander to 57% who do not.

One thing that's definitely not helping Romney in Michigan is the position he took on the auto bailout. 53% of voters think Obama has been better for the automotive industry in the state compared to only 31% for Romney. And this is something voters care about- 80% of voters say the candidates' record on the automotive industry is important to them, and 48% deem it to be 'very important.'

Each candidate has his party base pretty much locked up. Obama is winning 91% of Democratic voters, while Romney is taking 89% of Republican voters. Obama has the advantage overall thanks to a 54-38 lead with independents.

As a Michigander, I couldn't be happier to see Romney go down in the state he was born in.

Romney doesn't care about Michigan.

He left 40 years ago and went elsewhere to make his fortune and career.

He doesn't even own a home there. He has homes in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and California. So why not Michigan?

He only comes back when he wants their votes. And then he says ridiculous things like 'the trees are the right height'.

most was his gleeful willingness to let the car companies die. I don't think most will forget that before November. Romney has absolutely plastered his ads on television here in Metro Detroit( probably 6 or 7 Romney ads for every Obama ad) to no avail.

Remember, McCain was much closer in MI much later in the campaign, and it was a big deal when he pulled his ads - in late September, if I remember correctly. For Obama to be running an outright majority in Mitt's home state at this point means it's out of reach, and will go Obama easily. Change to hard blue, and make Mitt's mountain a bit tougher to climb.

I live in Grand Rapids and have seen no Romney signs or bumper stickers. I have had a Dogs Against Romney, Cat Division bumpersticker on my car for almost a month and have had a dozen people ask me where they could get one. This is not scientific at all but in 2008 Kent County went blue for the first time since 1964 and 2012 feels like a repeat of 2008.

34% Republican

33% Dem

It's a base election, which means anyone can win. If either party's base doesn't get to the voting booth, then they will lose, regardless of what the polls say
