And nice try on the breast-cancer-MS sympathy card, but you are still a nasty piece of work.

(6,960 posts)Really.
Queen Ann reminds me of those girls in high school that was always perfect, always smiling a plastic smile, always a phony.
There just isn't any depth in her speech; the correct words, but no genuine passion.
This lady is a elitist ... plain and simple.

...and then the way she speaks, Ann Romney is a sort of very aristocratic personage, and she came off as the lady of the house, the Grande Dame, but the narrative that she was selling, the aw shucks common suburban housewife, because those things don't match, the speech struck me as kind of odd. This was the well-born lady who married well, who's got a very wealthy husband, and who's quite proud of him and loves him, but it didn't feel warm . . .

(3,650 posts)I cringe a little when she mentions her MS. All I can think is the best of the best of medical intervention she has had for her challenge to be ongoing symptom free. It is as if she does not have MS. I am not questioning that she does, but if I ever have it I want that same superior medical intervention. I know, of course that I would not have that kind of care..nor would any of us " little" people....especially if her husband has anything to say about it.

And yes, despite her health challenges she seems to either not know or not care that her party wants to make sure only rich women like her will be able to treat their breast cancer or MS.
She's one out-of-touch spoiled Stepford wife.

(7,960 posts)You know, if riding helped her so much why wouldn't she use her high profile and her money to fund a clinic where people who have MS but who are not wealthy can enjoy the benefits of the muscle coordination and balance needed for the equestrian discipline.
She could call it "Rafalca's Place".

(108,914 posts)could make someone appear tipsy. A long time ago, people thought a neighbor's symptoms were due to drinking. I'm sure she did drink, but she also had undiagnosed MS.
beac
(9,992 posts)(or isn't supposed to)-- interesting that MS could make her seem tipsy. Possibly the ONLY indication that she has MS that I've ever seen.
That aside, I don't think MS or booze is to blame for the fact that she clearly didn't believe most of the BS she was selling and thus she came off as insincere and fake-- the ultimate plastic pageant queen.

(16,020 posts)Plus you get horribly exhausted and this time of night she probably is ready to drop especially after the stress of having to deliver that speech.

(3,626 posts)for MS? Can't it trigger a relapse or worsening of symptoms? If so, why in Dog's name would Mittens take that chance for his beloved wifey-poo? Maybe they consider being the First Lady to be just a walk in the park. Of course, Michelle does make it look easy, but graciousness comes to her naturally. Anne wouldn't know the definition of the word.

(30,439 posts)Michelle's delivery is just way better. Then again, Michelle is an accomplished woman with a law degree and brains. She attended Princeton University and Harvard Law School.
Ann Romney is nothing more than a house wife.

(30,439 posts)Definitely not housewives like Ann Romney who are millionaires thanks to their husband's shady venture capital dealings. Housewives that have everything given to them....who have maids and servants do everything for them.
No, I don't
beac
(9,992 posts)I think I should qualify what I meant by "tipsy." I didn't feel like her movement was off in any way, but she made several awkward, off-script outbursts that felt like the kind of thing someone with a little buzz going might say-- "I love all you women!", for example.

Warpy
(110,744 posts)and I have to say her makeup was flawless (unlike Christie, whose hands were several shades lighter than his face). She was making nervous movements with her hands from time to time, quickly dropping them below the podium, so she wasn't completely at ease. I got a big kick out of her obvious "golf clap" for Christie.
There were a lot of women with crossed arms during her speech, uncrossing them to do golf claps of their own, their frowns maintained. One brittle blonde in batwing glasses loved her. The rest were considerably more reserved.
Romney hisownself looked like a barely animated mannequin, as usual.

They have her speech up as a "Best Moment" ( ) on that page now, so you should be able to watch it.
I was kind of freaking out there - couldn't find anything, it was a page of twitter comments.
do I want to see this woman in action? I don't have tee vee so I don't know how her public speaking comes across at all.

I wouldn't subject yourself to her entire speech. A few minutes ought to do it. She had the same plastic, faux folksy, condescending demeanor throughout the entire speech, so a snippet should give you the gist.

(10,941 posts)hitting land she said that everyone should hope that there is no loss of life or property. Michelle would have focused on hoping for no loss of life. Only a Romney would include loss of property. I guess we should be lucky that she mentioned people first.

(10,941 posts)and here are my thoughts as I am watching it:
1. Did you notice the empty seats in the upper level?
2. Where was her flag pin?
3. She looks like a Stepford Wife. Plastic surgery? She could afford it.
4. She really has a thing about pointing her finger at you.
5. 4:49 into the speech delegates with deer in headlight expressions (watching on youtube)
6. 5:29 at least some of the delegates look a tad bored.
7. 5:40 polite applause - where is the enthusiasm?
8. 5:44 & 5:53 you can really see the empty seats
9. 6:00 there goes the two fingered finger pointing again - how annoying
10. 7:35 she continues to look uptight, not a lot of smiling and it seems forced when she does
11. Around 9:14 with both hands up she reminds me of an Evita Peron type figure (but without Peron's charisma)
12. There is something about her mouth and her body language that just comes across as very condescending.
13. The delegate just don't come across as enthusiastic about her.
14. 18:53 Is that one of her sons and daughter-in-laws? The girl looks really thrilled to be there.
15. 19:00 some people not clapping, I say a yawn (LOL!)
16. The whole think looks more like a lecture then a speech.
Bottom line Ann Romney is no Michelle Obama. I don't think she did much to change the minds of women, minorities and people who are independent or liberal.
patrice
(47,992 posts)emotionally. They don't care about what she is saying and that shows on their faces. I see reservations on their faces. And then, AS IF ON CUE, like they were told ahead of time to make a big "enthusiastic" noise when they got the signal, they finally do make a sound that's somewhat louder and more sustained towards the end there where AR says something about "Making America a better place."
Exactly my impression! This is somebody's canned idea of "human warmth". More like a lecture than a speech, not actually trying to talk to real people for real.

(5,901 posts)Phony baloney. It reeked of condescension. Funny thing is after Liddy Dole's speech the pundits swooned. However, public opinion came in a couple of days later and it was trounced and quickly forgotten. Now the pundits are cooing over Ann. I think her speech will suffer the same fate as Liddy's.
None of these Republican women are fit to shine Michelle's shoes.
patrice
(47,992 posts)That "real" had a deep enough ring to it, motivated probably by her disgust for those "phony" marriages out there and I don't think we have to guess very much before we figure out whose marriages those might be, you know, those ones who aren't supposed to love one another, let alone commit to making that effort for one another for life. Those by contrast, of course, are not "real marriages".
The other part that had a deep enough ring of sincerity to it was her, "Mitt's the one you can trust" as opposed to that other guy, you know, whom you can't trust, because . . . . well, there's just something that isn't trust worthy about that Democrat, despite all of the facts about Obama's administration, you know there's something un-trustworthy about Barack Obama, something suspicious that all of us can see, right?
There was also that: we were married and we had a door on 2 sawhorses and an ironing board and then we had 9 houses.
And all of that stuff about mothers having to work harder, no mention of whether there's a doctor to call when you need one doesn't matter if you don't have the money to pay for him/her. Just mother's work harder because that's the way it's supposed to be, no suggestions for change. She REALLY harped on that sense of victimization there. I know some lower-middle and lower-economic class white women that's going to play pretty well too.
All in all, I'd characterize this as a rather sly speech.
