The money is being spent...nearly wall to wall anti-Obama ads in NC...

including a superPac I've not heard of yet - "Historical Future" (which must be another one related to the inanely-named "Restore Our future" - how can one do that, really?).

I suspect that the bludgeoning is intended to, if not getting out the GOP vote, making everyone else so sick of it all that they stay home....

The joy of living in a battleground (as I've noted before).

The good news - after a few days of the gap narrowing, it seems to be turning again - see the percentages at the right on this link.

2. isn't that a stupid thing to do in a state with such a high level of education?

Fuck 'em. If they want to blow their cash where it won't do any good (for them), then let them.

That's the only "trickle down" we'll ever see, may as well take advantage of it.

4. Well, sadly, it is not quite like that - the high level of education is very concentrated

in just a few areas...surrounding that is a sea of red (and the apathy or brainwashed ignorance of remaining racism). You've got Asheville out west, Carrboro/Durham/Chapel Hill (and in part, Raleigh).....otherwise - redistricting has also had a really negative impact. It is a really beautiful state, a wonderful place to live....and suffers with lots of issues (denial of climate change and other embarrassing stances, for example).

"Restore Our Future" or something....when I first heard it I thought it was one of ours because it was talking about lies and distortions and such things. It would only make sense to me if it was talking about the repugs. Oh well....

7. You have to be able to mute or fast-forward through them. When they really are able to reach

people is during live TV, like sports, when people can't just fast-forward & are watching in real time. I'm in Cedar Rapids. I am literally diving for the remote when commercials hit. Pres. Obama is already being massively outspent. I think they were smart to spend lots of money early defining Romney. I think there really is a saturation point after which the ads simply not effective. It is really galling to see the pure garbage spewed at President Obama while Romney is running around whining that Obama's a big meanie and is smearing him. He is such a pathetic POS liar.

6. The whole thing could backfire with the intense negativity

If the ads just started I'd say look at the polls about 2 weeks from now and compare them to before they started and what the difference is. I bet it will be either very small bump (a point) for Team Asshole or maybe even a negative (gain for Obama).

9. Except when it doesn't. I offer to you Meg Whitman, who outspent Jerry Brown 3 to 1 on

advertizing and even more in other areas. She lost, Brown won. Her budget is what helped to hang her chances, it did not help her, it hurt her. Carly Fiorino spent like mad, she's not in the Senate, Barbara Boxer is.
To be blunt, the concept that more advertizing buys success for candidates or products is a well sold concept promoted by those who make ads and sell ad time. Anyone with eyes knows that is simply not the case. Heavily promoted products of all kinds fail regularly. Why, if ads are a magic sauce, would any company allow a product to fail rather than just spend more on ads until the product sells?
