2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumJust wondering...do all Mormons think it's ok to lie?
Since Romney is supposed to be such a good Mormon, where does it say in his bible that it's ok to just lie about anything. He stands up there like he's some preacher preaching to the choir, all the while lying through his teeth. Obama and his team better start fighting back ferociously because these petty little people are going to be in the white house.DCKit
(18,541 posts)Instead of singling out a religion, you'd be better off singling out a party or those who call themselves "conservative", "family values" or "politicians".
That said, there's a long history of "lyin' for Jesus".

(13,200 posts)Many Mormons are proud of the fact that they attempt to make their faith universal through baptizing the dead. Historically, Christians have been exclusive, says Terryl Givens, an expert on Mormonism at the University of Richmond. Catholics have taught that only Catholics are saved, and evangelicals say only if you confess according to their tradition. Mormons say, No, salvation is open to all people.
In that sense Mormonism is the most nonexclusive religion in the Christian world, Givens says.

(13,200 posts)In the above-noted video, which the Church tried to have repressed, an apostle instructs Mormon missionaries how to lie for the Lord, or answer the question he should have asked.
Lying for the Lord is a very common Mormon concept. Theyve been doing it for years.
My duty as a member of the Council of the Twelve is to protect what is most unique about the LDS church, namely the authority of priesthood, testimony regarding the restoration of the gospel, and the divine mission of the Savior. Everything may be sacrificed in order to maintain the integrity of those essential facts. Thus, if Mormon Enigma reveals information that is detrimental to the reputation of Joseph Smith, then it is necessary to try to limit its influence and that of its authors. (14,255 posts)According to my sister, who used to be Mormon, it is perfectly okay for Mormons to lie if that is what it takes to advance themselves or their goals if those goals will somehow enrich or further or protect the Mormon church.
So, in my opinion, Mitt likely thinks he SHOULD lie, if that is what it takes to amass a fortune or be president.
He is perfectly comfortable, because cognitive dissonance about lying just does not exist for him. Lying is just a necessary tool.
Whatever Mitt can't lie about - because there is hard evidence - is withheld or erased - tax returns, all electronic records from when he was governor.

(5,048 posts)Mormons are taught from an early age that there are two sets of rules. One set of rules for operating in the world and another set of rules for how you treat your church "brothers and sisters."
Lying to non-members is normal for Mormons.

(20,450 posts)everyday nearly spitting out a spleen, right? Oh, wait... you don't because the Corporate Media simply refuses to show Obama on the campaign stump. That's why so many people have the false impression that he's NOT fighting.
Welcome to DU!!
Watch C-SPAN if you can. They do a better job actually showing Obama, Biden and other Democrats "fighting back."

(10,857 posts)The "backfire effect" is a one-way door in politics whereby conservatives (only) are more likely to believe disinformation if it is refuted by a liberal.
Directly attacking Republican lies only solidifies the opinions of stupid--I'm sorry, "low-information"--voters.
In this election, the strategy is instead to lead the knuckledraggers back to their own greed. They don't know much, but they know they like money, and when they figure out that they can pay themselves by sitting this one out or voting Democratic, it's over.
Edit: Sorry, I missed the point. President Obama is using the bias of the Republican-owned media against themselves. By not covering him on Fox News, the Republicans are denying themselves the opportunity to further deceive their audience, by solidifying their disinformation. So he just sails right over that crap and continues to do an excellent job.

(12,504 posts)20+ years ago, I was told by a high ranking mormon official, that the stories and doctrnes (milk) they use is approprite to keep the masses in check and on the path to the Celestial Kingdom. Most are not ready for the truth (meat) and the deeper theologies of the religion.
So it's ingrained in the upper schmuckety mucks, that it's ok, if there is a noble cause. Romney protecting his money is a noble cause, apparently.

(10,857 posts)Yassir Arafat used to cut deals with the Israelis, then remind his base that Mo used to join in false treaties with enemies, then break the treaties and crush the enemies when the time was right.
The Catholic Church encouraged the same behavior against Muslims and Protestants. And so on.
It's because religion is a racket and rackets don't like competition. It's an easy sell to the chosen people of that religion, because the followers are already taught to think of everyone else as hostile and doomed to Hell (or whatever).
And then we have 170 years of actual lying, false dealing, political tap-dancing, and mass murder on the part of the Mormons themselves to consider. They are still a young cult and have yet to have their criminal ways codified in law--though it's Mitt's job to change that if he gets close enough to steal it.

It was a BOLD decision for the GOP not to put a Protestant on the ticket for the first time in history.
