CNN/ORC poll: Most think Congress is worst in their lifetime

Eight weeks before the midterm elections, a new CNN/ORC International poll shows that voters in key geographic regions favor Republican candidates heading into November, highlighting significant challenges for Democrats trying to protect half a dozen vulnerable Senate seats and ultimately control of the chamber.

Equally concerning for Democrats is that the GOP has a 15-point advantage with independent voters on the generic ballot, and Republicans have an edge at this point in supporter enthusiasm.

While Republicans are all but assured of maintaining a healthy majority in the House, the GOP needs a net gain of six seats to control the Senate and its committees that oversee the Obama administration. Should the GOP control Capitol Hill next year, it would be positioned to direct the legislative agenda and influence President Barack Obama's final two years in office.

Because of this, Democrats are desperately trying to protect at least five incumbents in Southern or heavily rural states such as Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, and North Carolina as well as an open seat in Iowa. Most of these races are considered tossups or the GOP has a slight advantage, according to state polling and analysis by independent political handicappers. Meanwhile, there is widespread belief that three other open Democratic seats in Montana, South Dakota and West Virginia have already been lost to Republicans -- putting the GOP within striking distance of the net gain of six seats needed to take the Senate majority.

By returning the GOP to the House and almost certainly giving them the Senate.

Go figure.

Again, I think these polls about "Congress" serve very little purpose. When we go to the polls, we don't vote for "Congress". We vote for the individual.

Republicans have successfully been able to run this country into the ground because we blame "Congress". That abstract term does very little good. I wish we could name names more. We barely even say which political party is to blame. We just say, "Congress." It's obvious that that does very little to get (progressive/liberal) people to the polls.

Well if the Senate turns, the obstruction will continue. Obama will veto every bad legislation and there will not be a 2/3 majority to override the veto. The only saving grace is last time the Repubs held the Senate, they lost if for years.....this will not change, many who will vote for the Repubs will see their actions and vote out their control. I am excited for the large amount of Democratic Governors...if we cant make headway in the Federal level, lets do it state by state.

Over one-third of Likely U.S. Voters remain unaware which political party controls the House of Representatives and which has a majority in the Senate - less than two months before an election that may put one party in charge of both.
