Related: About this forumZell Miller endorses Michelle Nunn for Senate
It means so much to me personally that this Georgia icon recognizes my commitment to be a bridge-builder and a problem-solver in Washington.
Plenty of people here willing to beat up on Hillary Clinton for her alleged "DLC" philosophy. Who's ready to throw Nunn under he bus and possibly lose the Senate, and long and you can stand on principle?

(8,964 posts)While Governor of Georgia, Zell Miller was an early Bill Clinton ally and placed his name in nomination at the 1992 Democratic convention. Shortly thereafter he shifted further to the right but remained a Democrat as a U.S. Senator, albeit by far the most conservative. He went out of his way to bash Kerry in '04 and gave a slanderous speech against him at the GOP convention that year, after which he angrily challenged Chris Matthews to a duel for having the nerve to question the substance of the speech. So I'm wondering why he's returning to the fold at this point? Nunn is much more of a moderate contrasted to Miller. Perhaps he has come to recognize that the GWB Bush presidency wasn't so hot after all and that allowing the Senate to go Republican at this point would not be in the national interest. Not to mention the over-the-top extremism that has permeated the Republican Party in Georgia. At any rate, his endorsement would hopefully persuade a number of undecided moderates and conservatives to go for Nunn.

(1,301 posts)What he pulled in 2004 was awful, but if he wants to come back to our side, I welcome him with open arms.

(3,003 posts)I'm from Georgia and can tell you that Zell Miller is a backstabbing, vindictive S.O.B. who loves to gain attention for himself. His support of Nunn is to get the media talking about that old, forgotten cracker one last time before he keels over.
Zig-Zag Zell can go straight to HELL.

(1,301 posts)I'm not from Georgia, or even within a thousand miles, and didn't get all that interested in the South's politics until I moved to South Carolina a couple of years ago. So while I was enough of a political geek to know who Zell was, at least when he got to the Senate, I don't have the historical perspective you do. I'm still inclined to give him a pass on this one if it serves the greater good, but I appreciate your thoughts!

(20,176 posts)I will say I believe it is a mistake to accept the nomination of Miller.
It may even play well in GA but it will have longer-term ramifications. It's like I'd be critical of any Democratic nominee for statewide or federal office in CT accepting the endorsement of Joseph Lieberman.
...and I still stand on principle and believe that Hillary shouldn't even be a member of the Democratic party if she cannot embrace core Democratic ideals.

(14,689 posts)Probably more of a personal endorsement because of Sam Nunn. Not sure how much Zell Miller's endorsement means anymore.
