Boehner warns on unilateral immigration action by Obama

BY MARK FELSENTHAL
WASHINGTON Thu Jul 31, 2014 1:53pm EDT

(Reuters) - House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said on Thursday that any unilateral steps by President Barack Obama on immigration would make matters worse and add to a "legacy of lawlessness."

"No more unilateral action by the president," Boehner said at a news conference.

"If the president takes these actions, he'll be sealing the deal on his legacy of lawlessness," he said. "He'll be violating the solemn oath he made to the American people on the day of his inauguration."

Boehner said the House planned to vote Thursday on legislation that would stop Obama from expanding his 2012 action to suspend deportations of children brought to the United States before mid-2007 by their parents.

There are numerous steps the president can and should be taking right now, without the need for congressional action, to secure our borders and ensure these children are returned swiftly and safely to their countries.

Let this sink in for a minute. The same House of Representative that just yesterday evening voted to sue the President of the United States, something no House in American history has ever done before, because he was acting on his own in areas where Congress refused to act is saying that the President can solve the border crisis on his own without Congress acting. I’m not sure if the correct word here is irony or chutzpah, but it’s certainly something.

to agree with him that the R's are setting a trap for Obama. If he tries to deal with immigration (a real hot-button issue with lots of R and other voters) unilaterally they will have finally found what can at least be plausibly made into a case for impeachment. Obama needs to manage this very carefully.

I suppose he could have the children labeled as refugees looking for asylum. Though I don't know.

and treacherous position. I truly believe that they are angling for something, anything to hang an impeachment charge on, and they (accurately) believe that doing something unilaterally on Immigration might well be it. It's a given that, no matter what he does, the R's will howl about it. I don't envy him.

It boggles my mind that day after day nobody wants to come out and talk about
the root of all the problems, nobody wants to admit that the racistublicans can't
stand the fact that it's taken a BLACK DEMOCRAT man to straighten out the mess
created by a WHITE REPUBLICAN man. And what's even worse is that there are
idiots out there, that are not racist, who are going to help give these racistublicans
control of both the house and senate. The first thing they will probably do is pass
a bill to have the taxpayers pay for the cleaning of their white sheets and hoods.
It's true that sometimes the truth does hurt. On the first day McConnell stood on
the floor of the senate and said they would do anything to see that President Obama
would be a one term President. Someone need to give them a reality slap in the face
to let them know he's in his second term. Last but far from least, when are the
democrats going to stop expecting the racistublicans to do anything to help the
people who work for minimum wage, the children at the border and so on and so
forth. And if we think this situation is bad, wait until 2016 when the chauvanistublicans
make their appearance.

Within the space of 3 hours, Boehner did a complete 180-degree turn on what Obama should not (then SHOULD) do alone. Even for the House Republicans that's gotta be a record.
