North Carolina Voters "Tar Heel" Same-Sex Marriage

Despite the national trend bending in favor of same-sex marriage, voters in North Carolina have overwhelmingly supported a ban on allowing everyone to be happy. Honestly, I was a bit surprised as the results came trickling in showing it was likely the ban would pass. Don't voters know their beloved basketball mascot - the Tar Heel - is named after a gay sex maneuver? One guy takes the other guy's legs, puts them on his shoulders, shouts three Hail Mary's and... Well, I'll let you figure out the rest.

1. Disappointing to say the least. Bev Perdue did a great segment on Rev Al today.

I don't think people realize that this opens the door to other bigotry. Same sex marriage was already banned in NC. There was no reason for the GOP to do this, except to flex their muscle now that they're in control of our legislature.

2. The GOP is like Saddam Hussein at the end of Gulf War #1.

At the end of Gulf War #1, Saddam realized that he was going to lose. So in defiance, he set the oil fields on fire.

That's exactly what the GOP is doing. Their time is coming to and end, and they know it. So now they are in the process of making as big a mess as they can on the way out the door.

Attack worker's rights. Attack gay rights. Attack women's rights. Attack the rights of ethnic minorities. Pass as much evil legislation as they possibly can.

And leave a huge mess for the rest of us to clean up. That's what I think they are doing.

mobilize those of us who should've voted against this crap. I know that this "primary" wasn't a big deal for many on the left as there's no doubt about our presidential nominee. On the flipside, however, there was much better turnout because of the open primary for the Repukes.

It's coming, whether they like it or not, but I just don't like my state being associated with hate and disenfranchisement.

My beloved Buckeye state overwhelmingly supported a ban on same-sex marriage in 2004, the first year I was able to vote. I couldn't have been more surprised. Nobody I had spoken with supported it. It's bizarre who comes out to vote for these amendments.

in mobilizing their congregations to the bidding of the GOP. We have early voting here, for which I'm grateful, because more people get to participate. However, a huge number of polling stations are located inside these churches. I would much prefer that civic & government buildings, paid for by all the taxpayers, be used for voting purposes.

How convenient is it to preach to your congregation on Sunday morning, and then open up the voting machines immediately after your sermon? Does that make sense to anyone?

fix NC.

My son is 18, straight, and voted in his very first election yesterday ... Obama in the dem primary, and AGAINST Amendment one ... so he helped Wake County have a majority vote AGAINST this nonsense.

When he got up this morning (well, actually he got up at about 11:30, he's home from UNCG and he keeps vampire hours) he came up from his room and was totally surprised that Amendment one passed. He couldn't believe it.

The whole idea seemed absurd to him. He said ... "shouldn't the state constitution protect your rights, not take them away??"

It pissed him off. Again, 18, straight male, and he's pissed that these right wing whack jobs did this. Makes me proud.

Your kid, and my nieces and nephews are all scratching their heads over this. I knew the polling data was against us, but I had hope that if it weren't defeated outright, it would be much closer. And seeing clips of those hateful folks celebrating with a wedding cake just adds insult to injury.

The teanutters were very smart to get this on the ballot at this time, because they know that they do much better when we don't turn out. It's the midterms all over again. If this measure were on the ballot in November, the outcome might have been much different. Who knows?

My hats off to you and your kid.
