Local Politics UMass Lowell-Herald poll: Ed Markey 20 points ahead of Gomez

by Joe Battenfeld
.

..U.S. Rep. Edward J. Markey, backed by an arsenal of attack ads and a huge spending advantage, holds a double-digit lead over GOP rival Gabriel Gomez as the special U.S. Senate election heads into the final days, a new UMass Lowell-Boston Herald poll shows.

Gomez has been hammered by a late round of negative TV ads that has driven up his unfavorable ratings and hampered his ability to get closer to his Democratic rival, according to the poll of 608 registered Massachusetts voters, including 312 likely voters taken this week.

“Gomez is in a deep hole right now and it has more to do with lopsided campaign spending than anything else,” said Joshua Dyck, co-director of the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion. “Markey is just beating him up.”

The UMass Lowell-Herald poll shows Markey is benefitting from support from President Obama, whose approval rating remains above 60 percent in Massachusetts despite a wave of scandals

Good article!
http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion/local_politics/2013/06/umass_lowell_herald_poll_ed_markey_20_points_ahead_of_gomez

I don't know how exact this poll is but the article is enlighting as to what Markey is up to these last days of his campaign.

I'm guessing the "the negative ads" "hammered" at Gomez are ads that are actually highlighting his history.

Gov. Deval Patrick’s approval numbers have jumped to 63 percent in the current UMass Lowell-Herald poll - the same as U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, which could be a sign that voters are still feeling positive about Patrick and the state’s performance in the wake of the bombing.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Gabriel Gomez’s wife is tearing into U.S. Rep. Edward J. Markey in the final days of the heated race — accusing the Democrat of using “dishonest and misleading” negative ads to turn women against her husband.

“I feel like Markey’s trying to scare women against Gabriel,” Sarah Gomez told the Herald in a rare interview, saying the negative ads have led many women voters to avoid the race altogether.

“I was with a group of young women and they said that they are not interested in politics because of all the fighting and all the negative ads on TV,” she said.

stop highlighting Gomez' record.

Markey senior adviser Mark Horan said the ads are an effort to give voters a clear look at both candidates’ records.

“Ed Markey has real differences with Mr. Gomez on key issues, including guns, Social Security and a woman’s choice,” Horan said.

Good Response!

"Gomez is in a deep hole right now and it has more to do with lopsided campaign spending than anything else,” said Joshua Dyck, co-director of the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion. “Markey is just beating him up.”

The lopsided spending~
Markey has more funds!

*****************************

Gomez even dissed the very man trying to bail out his losing campaign:
http://www.masslive.com/...

Republican Senate candidate Gabriel Gomez said Monday that he “couldn’t care less” if Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is raising money on his behalf.
McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, sent out a fundraising email for Gomez on Friday, pledging a three to one match of donations, up to $32,000, made to Gomez’s campaign that day.

Gomez said Monday, “I didn’t ask Mitch McConnell to write that email. I couldn’t care less if he had written that email or not. Bottom line is I’m not tied to anybody. I’m not tied to any rigid ideological position.” Gomez has not indicated that he would not take McConnell or other national Republicans’ money.

By the way, Gomez is getting no love from Boston's Spanish speaking press:

As Gabriel has not been in politics before this race he is being promoted as “an outsider” something that has a certain appeal for people who do not like politics. And at this point I want to emphasize that for the Latino community itself has been “an outsider” and that in no way he has worked with organizations and individuals in our community so that, for me, it’s Latin In Name Only (LINO). - Legal Insurrection, 6/3/13

his lies and "poor victim" binge whining.. and the issues.

Democrats spent the weekend tying Gomez to the national Republican Party, with the Markey campaign releasing a web ad featuring McConnell’s email. The ad argues that a vote for Gomez is a vote to obstruct Democratic President Barack Obama’s agenda. Obama is far more popular than the national Republican Party in Massachusetts, a heavily Democratic state. Democrats have pointed to Gomez's stances where he is in line with the Republican Party, such as opposing a ban on assault weapons, opposing abortion and refusing to raise taxes on the wealthy. - The Republican, 6/3/13

Oh the DEMS in Mass have that right on, she! Good on them for being relentless on their Truth Ads against Gomez!

I wonder if he knew what he was stepping into with Mass Dems, she?

I'm cracking up at the "advice" to Gomez from one Holly Robichaud..

Don’t apologize for calling Markey “pond scum.” He deserved it for putting your picture next to Osama Bin Laden. The shoe fits.

Go after Markey for bragging about his
Obamacare vote. In 2010, being against the government takeover of health care helped elect Scott Brown.

With each taxpayer owing $148,000 toward the national debt, hold Markey accountable for his zero rating with Citizens Against Government Waste. Any first-grader could find waste to cut in the federal government.

Set the record straight on the phony people’s pledge. Markey started off this campaign with
$3 million in his war chest from lobbyists and PACs. His demand that you limit groups from advertising on your behalf is as phony as his Malden address.

Ask Markey to list all the taxes he has supported over the past three decades. Be prepared to start listing them. There are 271 of them.

If you have any tattoos, don’t offer to show them.

Quote U.S. Rep. Stephen F. Lynch on Markey being a liar. It will help win over blue-collar Democrats.

• Ask Markey if he can define the term “middle class.” If Lizzy Warren is in the audience, she won’t be able to give him a lifeline.

• Make a joke about him inventing Google or ask him what his cable bill in Malden runs him.

• When you get Markey on the ropes, finish him off. Don’t let up like Mitt
Romney did in his second and third debates with President Obama. - Boston Herald, 6/3/13

Their swiftboat sank. ooops.

Hmmm ... it looks like being a swift boater might not be going over so well in Massachusetts for Republican Gabriel Gomez, who of course wants to fill John Kerry's vacated seat (you know, Kerry, the guy against whom swift-boating was invented). To refresh your memory, Gomez has acted as spokesperson for OPSEC, the GOP-aligned group of right-wing veterans who ran ads in 2012 trying to swiftboat President Obama over Osama bin Laden and Benghazi.
Now, after having appeared on national cable television news as spokesperson for OPSEC, Gomez is frantically trying to deny that he ever had anything at all to do with the group.

is strong with this one.

I'm remembering how much I hated that damn feeble attempt at "swiftboating" PBO. The movie going out to theaters. And, now Mr Gomez is hating how he's been rightfully associated with it.

Far from comparing Gomez to bin Laden, Markey's campaign was simply playing a clip from the video that Gomez had appeared on television to defend. It was Gomez's video that included images of bin Laden, so the "ugly" split screen of bin Laden was actually nothing more than juxtaposing Gomez with the video that he had appeared on television to defend. Follow below the fold to see the image—and one from the very same video of Gomez split screened with President Obama

So if the first split screen was ugly, then what about the second? Is the NRSC communications director going to accuse Markey of implying that Gomez endorsed Obama, or that Obama endorsed Gomez? Of course not, because that would be ridiculous. But it would be no more ridiculous than whining about a Gomez-bin Laden split screen.

Markey, 37 years, and Gomez’s dumbest line

My goodness, this “37 years” line has come and gone and provided very little in the way of a wedge for Gomez. By definition it cuts both ways: Yes, Markey’s been in Congress a long time. On the other hand, maybe there’s a reason why he keeps getting re-elected. As President Bartlett put it: “We have term limits in America. They’re called elections.

For those of you who doubt the 11-dimensional chess being played by the President, let us recap the state of affairs so far. Thanks to the appointment of John Kerry as Secretary of State, President Obama has:

* Made Elizabeth Warren the senior Senator from Massachusetts, the first to be consulted in Congress on any matter pertaining to the Commonwealth, regardless of whom controls Congress;

* Placed one of the Commonwealth's most reliable and hard-working liberal Congressmen in position to be promoted to the Senate in Kerry's place;

* Safely handed off the local election mechanism for Markey's seat in the recently changed 5th District. If Markey wins, he will be able to lend powerful support to the Democratic candidate in that district; it is probably safe in the 2014 election;

* Nearly completed the transition of Massachusetts's Senate representation after a 20-year period of political stability.

Thus by appointing one Senator to a rewarding position in which he is excelling, President Obama has created two new war-horse Senators for Massachusetts, either one of whom will certainly be considered in Presidential politics from now on just as Kennedy and Kerry always were.

The balance of power in the Senate shall be further cemented in the Democratic favor on the eve of the most important mid-term elections we've had in decades.

Ed Markey has the potential to be one of the most eloquent and compelling liberal voices on the Senate floor for the next two decades, which in my opinion is the most important outcome. Let us have no surprises.

that was some awesome prognosis, from you!

The next obvious thing to do would be to pick a Mass. politician who can fill Kerry's shoes, someone with wide experience, particularly in Congress, high visibility, and strong oratorical skills, since the person is going to have to campaign like hell out of the gate. A sitting Member of the House might be a good choice, because you can pick a prominent Representative from a comparatively safe district and run that person without a high risk of losing both seats.

So, I conclude, the next move is going to be to go after Ed Markey and beg him to consider changing wings of the Capitol. I believe Markey has refused to do this in the past, or been overlooked for other reasons. But on the surface Markey seems to me to be the best and most obvious choice.

Markey necessarily would offer coattails to his chosen successor, too, because Markey's base of operations in any statewide campaign would certainly be in his old district, where he can easily campaign with his replacement.

From Debbie Wasserman Schultz~

“Ed Markey proved once again tonight that he is the right leader for Massachusetts and will stand up for middle class families in the U.S. Senate. At the same time, tonight was Gabriel Gomez’s final test: Would he give Massachusetts voters honest answers to the serious questions they have about his out-of-touch policy positions and his business experience? He failed that test.

“Gabriel Gomez has put his business experience front and center but refuses to provide answers to the questions Massachusetts voters have about that experience. He refuses to release the list of clients he worked for at Advent International. He refuses to answer simple questions about the role he played in creating jobs overseas. Massachusetts voters can’t trust Gabriel Gomez because he refuses to answer these basic questions about the central premise of his candidacy.

“And try as he might, Gomez can’t run from the national Republican Party or the fact that he would be a rubber stamp for their extreme agenda in Washington. He prefers two sets of rules for Americans when it comes to taxes – one for the wealthiest and corporations and one for the middle class. He would vote for Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade. And he opposes a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines.

“The choice is clear in this election. On the issues that are important to Massachusetts voters – tax fairness, women’s health and reducing gun violence – Ed Markey is a proven leader Bay Staters can trust. He will represent their values and best interests in the United States Senate.”
