Economists like Nobel prize-winner Paul Krugman have warned that Republicans could "blow up the world economy" if they refuse to raise the nation's debt ceiling but Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) disagrees, saying that it could actually be a "wonderful experiment."
During a Tuesday interview with conservative talk show host Sandy Rios, Coburn insisted that only "stupid things" would be shut down if the the debt ceiling was not raised.
"Were going to collect $200 billion a month if in fact the government were to not extend the debt limit," he insisted. "Social Security would be paid, Medicare would be paid, the essentials would be paid; its the non-essentials that wouldnt be paid, its the $250-300 billion a year in stupid things we do that we wouldnt pay, its the programs that arent an absolute necessity that wouldnt get funded, the things that would be a necessity would get funded."
Coburn continued: "It might be a wonderful experiment, regardless who wins the next election or not, just to see if we could live on the money thats coming into the Treasury and not have to borrow against the future of our children."

Or the subsidized travel provided to Senator Coburn.
Or the annual COLA's Senator Coburn receives while he campaigns to limit COLA's granted to federal employees and social security claimants.
Senator Coburn of course would never borrow against the future of his children.

(666 posts)don't know what stupid is. Is it - corporate welfare, oil subsidies, congressional perks?? I seriously think that senator Coburn should make a list of spending cuts and give it to the president for review. Let's see what he thinks is "stupid".

Secondly, I hate it when someone is willing to hurt someone else to get what he wants, and that's what Coburn is advocating.

This loudmouthed fool ran for office on the 'there are lesbians in the bathrooms' platform and he's just gotten more backward and unreasonable since that intellectual highlight. Makes me ill. A wonderful experiment....
