Pop quiz, hotshots.

You're the President. The leaders of Congress, which has a recent history of insane obstruction and of opposing everything you do simply because they hate you personally, a history which is becoming increasingly reflected in the public perception of Congress and of the opposition party in general, comes to you in public dialogue and says the following:

We would like you to give us demands X, Y and Z. We hope you will, because wouldn't it be a shame if we failed to raise the debt ceiling, thus destroying the global economy?

What is your best response?

You have correctly inferred my spinelessness. Here are the things you've asked for. See you when we do this again in six months.

If you try it, I will mint a trillion dollar coin to pay down the debt, thus raising questions about my seriousness.

If you try it, I will issue promissory notes which I have no legal obligation to pay, thus raising questions about my trustworthiness.

If you try it, I will invoke my interpretation of the 14th Amendment to spend money anyway, thus raising questions about my willingness to follow the Constitution.

Please proceed, gentlemen.

Allowing Republicans to proceed and, possibly, push the world back in a recession is immoral.

There are no good or winning answers available, so I support negotiation that is not hostage taking of the economy, going around the Congress with the stupid coin idea, or going to the Supreme Court with the 14th solution.

I hope Obama does. I hold no hope for the lunatics in Congress, their memory goes only as far back as the last propaganda speech they listened to.

Fanatics think shutting the government down is a fun thing to do and a way to please Uncle Grover. The reality of it bites them in the ass, hard.

As long as Obama doesn't cave to these idiots, everything will be fine, although the short term is likely to be rough.

The Agenda: Inside the Clinton White House, By Bob Woodward

Page 323

Greenberg also presented to Clinton the latest polling and focus group research and an analysis he had done with Carville in a quarter-inch-thick report called "The Presidential Project." It stressed the notion that Congress was the new Soviet Union equivalent - and Clinton had to manage and dominate the relationship with Congress. Clinton was at first taken with the idea. But later, after dining at the White House with a group of historians who argued that the presidency was defined as much by vision as by legislation, Clinton revised his view. "Managing a relationship with Congress can't be the sum and substance of this presidency,” he said afterwards. He had come to believe the presidency could be used to make dramatic moral statements.

The right decision is never the easiest. I think President Obama, a man of strong moral conviction, is perfectly aware of this.
