So is Steny Hoyer going to be the new Speaker of the House??? (Original Post) madinmaryland Dec 2012 OP

24. Name one republican member that will vote for a Democrat for speaker

Not. Going. To. Happen.

The two conferences (Democratic and Republican) meet separately to select their nominee for Speaker. The vote is between those two nominees. So the repubs will have had their fight and selected their nominee. Even if they are divided on that vote, they aren't going to support anyone but their candidate when it comes to choosing before their candidate and the Democratic Party's candidate.

If you think that the repubs are going to join Democrats in a "coup" to select a Democrat speaker you are dreaming.

they might have a little problem finding another wannabe cheeto but I'm sure they'll find another buttwipe. Cantor always looked like an evil puppeteer standing behind Boner every time he was on camera, it'll either be Cantor or Ryan unless they have a major epiphany and find someone with more than two functioning brain cells.

Is it just the person with the most votes or do you need 50% +1

The Republicans nominate one person for Speaker and the Democrats nominate one person for Speaker. It is always a party line vote so the party that has the majority wins the Speakership.

There were rumors a week ago that Pence was plotting on challenging Boehner for speaker, with the support of the 4 republicans kicked off committees and other tea parties, this is only likely to give him more ammo.

Cantor is too closely aligned to Boehner to be supported by the far right, even if he stabs him in the back and announces a run for speaker right now he likely won't have the votes.

And no, I doubt that Hoyer or some democrat will somehow end up being speaker. The minority party getting a majority leader elected only happens if moderates rebel, or a few really corrupt congressmen who have nothing to lose because they're about to be indicted, of which those against Boehner are neither.

Mike Pence as been elected Governor of Indiana

So, I don't know why anyone would have started a rumor about a Pence speaker challenge.

I've read that during the negotiations that led to the super committee being formed that Cantor burned a lot of respect from fellow republicans by basically acting like a spoiled bratty kid who was zero help in negotiations with democrats, as well as acting like a guy who's just out to get their mug on TV and improve their public image so they can become speaker of the house one day.
